July 2017 - Time to straighten up!

    July 4

Razor - Gillette Aristocrat/Kai Pain Stick
    Blade - voskhod-teflon-coated.jpg (1) kai-captain-titan-mild-bladessmall.jpg (3)
    Soap - Route 66 Sweeney Todd/Arko
    Brush - 30 DC LE/VDH Boar
    Post - Alum

With Cinco de Julio on the books tomorrow I decided to play it smart and not do another run with the Feather SS and Feather Pro. No need to risk making things rough out ahead of the popsicle sticks. So, I chose one of my favorite setups. The "Detente" combo featuring the Aristocrat and Voskhod. American brass, Russian steel. Can't beat it for smoothness, finish, sharpness, you name it. Now, because I am focusing on straights this month I still wanted to get some time in with a pain stick. Hey, it's head shave night. So the Kai with Titan Mild blade for the head shave. Soap for the main shave was the Rt 66 Sweeney Todd in all its orangy goodness. Arko as always for the head shave.

Head shave was first and I'm happy to say that there was no blood shed. A few times I nearly set down wrong but caught myself before doing any damage. Getting the angle right on the back of the head while looking in a mirror is a bit of a trick. But, all's well that ends well and it was a fantastic chrome dome experience with the Kai. I'm feeling pretty confident about moving to a traditional straight next week.

Main shave was nothing short of amazing. The Aristocrat is the first razor I did a rule with. And I used Voskhod. I know this combination. This combination rocked to the BBS and all's well that ends well.

Hope you had a fantastic Fourth! Today finished my 7th in a row at work and I only have 5 more until a day off.

    CINCO DE JULIO is NEXT!!!!!!!

I've taken pictures that made me grab razors to see what's on them before too. Somehow the camera picks up what the eye misses. Or else magnifies it to make it look worse than it is.

That would make it Quatro de Julio but I think the Cartel could forgive you. It's Cinco somewhere, comprende?

Limited edition brush AND razor. It doesn't get any classier than that.

Used up the last of my Barrister's Reserve Spice sample for a nice slick lather. Maiden voyage for my LE 30DC brush with the Omega 10098 knot from my Shavey award for Prettiest Face. This brush is set at about 75mm of loft, and lathers like a beast. It looks pretty classy too.

My razor for today is two tounge depressors with a Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum stapled between them. Used a light duty staple gun, and clinched them down with a hammer and anvil for a better hold. Opted for the delux model this year and wrapped the handle. Tounge depressors are a lot wider than popsicle sticks, and with the limited blade exposure and wrapped handle, there was NO blade flex at all.

I very carefully did three and a half passes. The razor is very light, but I could lay it down to get very shallow blade angles. Does everyone want to hear about the blood? How bad the alum lit me up?

I have multiple razors I could get $300-500 dollars for. This damn thing gave me a blood free, irritation free, BBS shave that was more comfortable than any shave I have had in months. Alum was silent. A little tickle from the PAA Creosote aftershave, but not much. So, one of my best Epic shaves ever. Still shaking my head and laughing.

And they're OFF!! Great start to Cinco de Julio! Maybe with that design a limited edition 30DC is a possibility!

    SharptoothC I bite..........

    A. I think MAYhem was a terrific training camp for this shave.

    B. Looking at the blade exposure and the way your razor is set up, coupled with your experience with straights and shavettes, it makes sense that you would have a terrific shave.

    C. If tongue depressors are acceptable, I think I will go the same route. My popsicle sticks are pretty thin. Thanks for being a guinea pig!

Everybody knows the drill! Barbasol, shavette, kung fu, mojo, blah blah blah blah blah blah.....Ah, here we are! Tomorrow is Cinco de Julio The first person to get 85 square inches of new-yakuza tattoo--covering entire left pectoral while stone cold sober, followed by a Popsicle shavette in the same 6 hour period wins the Jedi mind games for 2017. Hint: It probably won't be any of you. Tomorrow's forecast in Denver, CO, USA: mostly rowdy with a good chance for pain. Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado.
Have a stupendous Cinco de Julio!

You'd love shavettes as a travel option or pace change, as you've done a few hundred open blade shaves. Different game now....

Just grab that SE blade in your fingers and go to town. No need for a stick.
