July 2017 - Time to straighten up! July 7 Razor - 1918 Gillette Old Style Blade - (2) Soap - Tabac Brush - Jayaruh #46 Post - Alum Yeah, yeah, I know. Tonight was supposed to be back to a straight. But, I had the Feather in the Old Style and couldn't resist another run with it. After last night's pretty near perfect performance it was too tempting. Plus, I have a new tub of Tabac that's been on the shelf for months. Time to revisit that old classic as well. The lather with the Maggard synthetic knot? Fabulous on a very short load. Enough for all the passes I wanted to take or would ever want to take. The first pass on the shave was very nice. Smooth, though you always feel the blade on this razor. The second pass, well, not bad if you don't count my right side on the neck. Apparently I let the angle get a little steep and had several nice nicks and weepers on that side. And the burn was evident even without adding anything to it. Yep, irritation is high. I got over confident apparently and let my guard down. And when you do that with the Old Style......especially with a Feather in it.....you pay a price. Alum sealed the bleeding and had me dancing a bit. As I sat down to type this I got back up after about 30 second and added Nivea to the finish to try and calm it down. Even the Nivea stung going on but it's cooling off now. Ironic, isn't it, that if I had stayed with the original plan to go pain stick or straight I probably would have less irritation and no blood. Such is the price for going vintage and getting careless. Oh, it's a DFS. I realized it was getting a little out of hand so skipped some touch up. Hope you have a great weekend!

I just had one of the best shaves a man could ask for and it took me more than a half hour to do it. Three slow, relaxed passes with the Glacial Lemon Chill soap's FRIGID lather were so enjoyable and I ended up with a Dolphin Smooth Shave. The Glacial Unscented balm is really a work of art on Rod's part - that stuff not only keeps the freeze going, it moisturizes and kills any chance of irritation or razor burn to begin. A couple of splashes of the Lemon Chill witch hazel added an extra coating of icicles on my face. I noticed that the Astra blade was getting a bit tired, but I think it'll hold up for tomorrow! Have a great Saturday, folks!

Thank you. When I uploaded the picture to the PC I wasn't sure about it. I always struggle to minimize the reflections in the metal handled brushes.
Lots of Shave learning this morning. Very little involved technique, though. After yesterday's lackluster shave, apparently Mars stopped "retrograding" and yin came back to kick yang's booty with a freaking awesome shave! Ironically this happened despite using a new soap whose scent was not my thing. So today I went with two brand spanking new products: a Delta Echo Razor that I bought from another member who had never used it, and B&M Dickens soap. The Delta echo was my first shave with a modern DE razor in several months, as almost all my experience is with vintage Gillettes. This is a very heavy razor, and shaves very differently than I'm used to. Took a stroke or two to find the right angle, and then it was smooth shaving. Extremely smooth, and extremely close in fact. Wow! Shave zen restored today as quickly as it left me yesterday. Meanwhile, the Dickens goes into a drawer to be traded for another B&M soap whose scent I enjoy more (TBD) while the pink leftover mark on my chin left by the straight confirms to my right brain that my ultimate goal - the CJB shavette that taunts me from its stand - will need to wait a bit before I take it for a spin. Shave on, gentlemen!
