I agree. I think I have a lot more scars than the current generation will have. I'm either tougher or dumber.
Trying to keep up with this thread is telling me that my life is too busy. I am having the hardest time carving out time to read what you guys are up to. At least I'm a captive audience on Sunday mornings. I can sit in the chair while donating plasma and respond with one handed typing Have a great Sunday.
In my humble opinion, for what it's worth, (insert two cents here), since you have already been working with straights the Pros should be fine. Be aware, however, that pain sticks are not straights. Yes the technique is quite similar, but the blades are less forgiving than a true straight razor. The steel blades are stiff, sharper than most honed razors, and you have no early warning that it is about to cut. If you feel the "zinger" you're going to be bleeding. You might consider getting a couple of the Pro Guards or the Kai Milds from tryablade.com to do the first few shaves with. That will lessen the risk of a technique error producing blood. But, if you're confident and getting great shaves from the straight, going straight to Pros shouldn't prove too painful.
I only have 3 scars: 1. Acquired on my thumb in Boy Scouts learning to whittle down wood with a knife. 2. Acquired above my eyebrow learning to shoot a scoped rifle. 3. Recently acquired on my chin from straight shaving. All are minor. All are fading. All taught me something and were acquired learning a skill that most are too timid to learn. Life is too short to be timid. Besides, occasionally you get lucky and acquire these skills - ski jumping, barefoot water skiing, downhill snow skiing, etc. - without scars or serious injury. Bonus.
At some point in the near future, we need the group photo of all 30 DC LE brushes. When gathered on one hard drive sprinkle in some photo manipulation a collage image can be magicked up. I'm thinking owners choice of backgrounds to add variety, and a bit of graphics to note type of knot. Anyone in?
Good photograph. I agree with your assessment of the Timeless razor. Happy for you that it all worked out.
I'm taking that as a negative review of the shave cream? One third of a shave is playing with soap and brush. If the lather is brushless and the razor is aggressive you crossed over into immovable object/unstoppable force territory.
I think this is a great response, but I have a slightly different point of view about the "guarded blades" When you use an AC bladed razor, everything Neal said above holds true. They require the utmost skill in terms of using a light touch, and paying attention to what you are doing around your contours. Now take that blade and coil a little piece of wire around it so the blade doesn't get QUITE so close to your skin. If your beard is coarse, that means trying to get that right down to skin ATG pass requires pressure. Guess what the worse possible thing you can do is, while shaving with a pain stick? (Besides horizontal slicing motions?? ) When I was a kid, my dad and grandpa always told me a dull knife was more dangerous than a sharp one. I find that adage to hold true here. I know a lot of people swear by the guarded blades, but I will swim upstream on that one.
Thank you Jared. I agree on the Old School look. As soon as I saw the handle I knew I would install a boar knot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'll give the soap another try with a different razor. I might even try lathering it next time as well. At this point I wouldn't recommend it but I'm not going to discourage my wife or daughters from bringing shaving related gifts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
July 23, 2017 Razor: M3 Schick Injector (5) Blade: Personna Twin Brush: 30DC LE w/Virginia Sheng Pure Badger Cream: Simpsons Luxury Post: Alum, Listerine, WH The shave started out a bit tuggy. I didn't think I had used the blade for that many shaves, but it had been a while since the last one so I hope the edge didn't go bad while sitting. Things did settle out by the second pass so I'll probably try the blade again tomorrow and see where it is. Two passes and a little bit of touchup to a BBS with no issues.
