A Rubberset 207. It looks fabulous. I absolutely love this picture; the ferrule unscrews, in order for the barber to sterilise the knot. The image, as you can see, is from oldschoolshavingbrushes.com which is a fabulous resource. I live in the U.K. and I would love to restore some of the fabulous brushes, you American guys can get hold of. You have such iconic brands. Cheers.
This morning I used the EverReady 600 Nylon (Top shelf, left end) and it worked every bit as well as my new synthetics but felt more like a boar than a badger; closer to a modern Omega than a modern Thater. In all, it was interesting and pleasant. There wasn't a #207 in the box though which after thinking about it really is kind surprising. In the other box that had the razors and stuff there were several Rolls and Autostrops and stuff that likely came through one of the barber shops dad insured. Maybe there is yet another box of old junk with a #207 or even a #400. But if it's there I have no idea what box it might be hiding in.
I think we often tend to forget just how nice the shaving brushes made in the US were. My Baton and Plymouth and Made Rite and EverReady and Peerless and Rubberset and Aristocrat and Century and Opal and Erskine brushes are among the most comfortable and pleasant brushes I own. They compare directly with modern brushes from Kent and Thater and Vulfix and Simpson and Omega and Zenith.
Ooh, look at that! Quick get the polish out, stroke it, caress it. Oh.. er.. Sorry guys, forgot myself, for a moment Very nice.
Great brush names. I've found the prices to be quite expensive on eBay for brushes but the postage is the killer.
I was lucky. Most of them were in another box I found in the garage so no postage involved and they likely cost my dad or grandad maybe three bucks each max. It's great coming from a long line of pack rats.
I looked into having this one replated and found out that the pot metal they used wouldn't take a replating. Pretty disappointing. Rubberset did make other metal brushes though. They made, of course, the iconic Rubberset 400 plus a nice take-down travel brush. These are their most often encountered metal brushes. Here are the others: I think the model 543 is more attractive and is found pretty readily. Very nice brush and same screwing ferrule that is interchangeable with the 207 and travel model. I actually have one of these that came NOS. Cherry. The model 513 "Boss Barber" is my favorite little brush. Cool as hell even though it feels really small in my hand.
Thanks. I've never seen any of these. I assumed they were made from aluminium, I didn't realise some were pot metal. The 543 and the 513 are very nice. Great picture.
