....do you have?? You know, the one that you shave with and then say, "I could use this one everyday". But you don't cuz another catches your eye. Then, using another razor, you find yourself saying the same thing again. As for me, I have 3 that I say that about. First is my Weber DLC with classic handle. When I first got it I thought nothing could top it. And it is still a fantastic shaver that I'll never part with. Second is my Parker Variant. For me it's one of the best ever, always providing a wonderful, comfortable shave and I'll never part with this one either. Third is my franken razor. A EJ DE87 head with a Scotch & Stowe handle that looks like the Maggard MR5 handle. A great easy shaver combo that treats my face well and provides marvelous shaves. Of course, I've got a bundle of other razors and most provide excellent shaves and I don't hesitate to use them. I just use my top 3 more. So, the question is, "How many of these type razors do you have"?
I'm a simple man with simple taste ... Techs (1932 Canadian, English and pre war) Standard Flare Fat Boys What can I say, I like vintage.
I only have about a half dozen razors(mostly vintage gillettes), but I say that about any of them. I get great shaves from each and every one of them and could be happy with any. If I couldn't be happy with it every day, then there is no sense in keeping it around.
This list changes Right now my top performers/ favorites/ itch scratchers are 1) merkur progress 2) grand shave king self lubricating razor 3) barbasol floating head 4) Above the Tie Calypso R1 5) Matador Elegante 6) Merkur Futur Not saying my fleet of vintage Gillette don't deliver (mostly do), just the above are joyous events.
#ONE '59 E-4 Fat Boy Tie for B) '55 A-4 Red Tip or '46-47 Aristocrat No. 4 The Bunny followed by a handful of Schicks. I tried to like straights but the upkeep and honing is more effort that fun. Shavettes are OK but I'm not super thrilled with my results. GEM type SE's just didn't do it for me. They found new homes.
I have razors that will consistently give me nice BBS shaves, including my newest one, a Rockwell 6C in gunmetal which is an excellent shaver. But I honestly will say, that if all of them were taken away and only one allowed to keep, it'll have to be my Fatboy. I always get the shaves I want from it, and it can dial it up or down depending on how much of a beard I have. It's also perfect in size and weight for me.
Used to think I had it narrowed down to one. Actually believed it. Was at four there for awhile. Closest I can get now is six. I could live with any one of them, decided I just don't want to.
One and only one...Merkur 34C. I have a baker's dozen or so in my rotation, a good mix of DE, SE and injector. I'll randomly pick which ever sparks my interest or catches my eye that day. Variety is the spice of life. For me though, none can hold a candle to the 34C. It consistently delivers a smooth, clean, comfortable shave day in and day out. Many have tried to unseat the champion, none have succeeded. It is "The One."
For me, "the One" is more like three: - Timeless DC .95 polished on Pineapple - Timeless SB .95 matte on Pineapple - 1941 US Gillette Aristocrat (no end caps like the Regent Tech) - honorable mention: Bradrei (Sheffield steel Solingen ground); E.A. Berg (Eskilstuna); Parker Variant adjustable.
For me it is now the Rockwell 6s, which replaced the Merkur Futur, which replaced the Merkur 39c, which replaced the New LC I can also get excellent results from my Maggard Slant and Aristocrat
I like several razors, but if I had to do a 30 day rule/focus, I would pick my triangle slot, fat handle tech, and I would be fine with it.
NEW Short Comb circa 1932-1940 Paired with a Gillette Silver Blue it's a stubble assassin. I could shave with just this razor. It was my first fleamarket find and cost me $5 and some elbow grease. I have more vintage razors that I love, but I would be okay with just this one.
