The "What Went Wrong?" Shave

Ah, finally SEptember. Summer is just about over! I know, many people are fans of the summer. I'm not one of them. Fall, hands down, is my favorite season.

Today's shave was brought to me by the following:
Razor: Schick Paul Revere edition injector
Blade: Personna
Brush: JR113
Soap: Cella

Jared @PickledNorthern shared a lathering video with me, so I gave that a try today. Gotta say, it worked great. I've yet to have any trouble getting a good lather with Cella, but this technique - and the JR113 - really kicked it into high gear. I don't think I used any more soap than normal, but I had a ton of lather. Could've shaved another couple of times with the leftovers.

The Schick performed like a dream. Three easy passes. Piece of cake. My face was nice and smooth. No cuts, nicks, weepers, or irritation. Just a great shave..

"So, why are you asking what went wrong", you wonder.

Well, it was just too easy. Not even a weeper. Shouldn't shaving be more difficult than this?

Kidding aside, I've only used this Schick a few times, and it's just so intuitive and easy. It almost feels like I'm cheating.

The process doesn't have to be a challenge. Congrats on finding a combination of hardware, software, & technique that give great results with minimum drama.

Once you get a couple of good ones under your belt, it is all a matter of developing muscle memory. That, and Schicks are super user friendly.

Agreed! At least the ones that I have...don't know much about all the other styles of Schicks. I think that they'll be used on and off throughout the month, but mainly I'll stick with DE razors - that's where I really need to improve technique.

As much as I enjoy vintage razors using a prototype is exciting, too. The Kiss My Face SC is not new, but I haven't used it more than three times yet. Too many soaps, not enough time. It's easy to lather, gives great glide & residual slip. I'd want more scent if it was an option and I might try the menthol Cool Mint if I ever finish this jug. Using a cream called for a badger knot. Tom's @twhite B-400 is a natural paring when I use his Bunny injector. Having the other two ferrules loaded with a synth and a boar I'm set to match any soap. Popped in a fresh blade after I'd made a bowlful of lather. Swapped out the comb for the MILD unit and commenced to relearning this unique SE. The grip is quite different from last months fat Gillette. No knurling, just a smooth polished slightly flared shaft held like a paint brush at nearly 90° straight out. After W, A, & XTG I had enough left over lather to push for lots of clean up duty. Couple places on my neck that I just didn't get the right angle right so call it a 4 pass shave. Or 5? Either way after I rinsed off lather and gave the alum block a silent tour. I may keep at The Bunny for a couple days and chase that baby. Post care courtesy of my father who passed me the remains of a bottle of military issue alcohol based menthol aftershave. It still had a pleasant burn, very little cooling menthol, and a plasticy smell from the bottle. Stuff might be 20 years old...
Good Shaves Y'all!

The Schicks are all pretty close. The G's and E's have a lot more open blade, and need a good, light touch. The rest are very close.

I think DE's require much more attention to what you are doing.

The earlier Schicks (the Repeaters) are quite fussy with angle but reward big time that attention.

Very cool setup!

The two injectors I have...you can almost shave drunk in the dark and get good results. That's why it's almost like cheating. Can't deny the shave you get with 'em, however! You don't need the pressure of a cartridge razor, but you don't need to pay close attention. Efficient and forgiving.

It's gonna be a great month of shaves. The MMOC requires a very soft touch and a lot of focus on angle. If you can maintain that focus, it'll reward you with a nice, smooth shave. I only got one small weeper out of the deal, and it closed up on its own.

I've been holding off on Stirling soaps in anticipation of using them all this month. Island Man did not disappoint, and it smells good, too. That's where I fell off of focus. I got to thinking about what aftershave would match it, and the Aqua Essenziale Blu was close enough. I need to pick up some Aqua Velva and Skin Bracer to keep me on track.

Well, September is here and this place is lighting it up as always! Great to see some of the fantastic SE gear in use this month. The only downside for me at the moment? The month started on the same day as the Labor Day Sale at work. One of our busiest weekends. Long hours, lots of people to deal with and meals so far off schedule that my system has no idea what's happening. So, to simplify things I'm using a "simple setup" for the next three nights. Something that will let me get a quick and effective shave with minimal thought or effort. The Fatip and Sharp Star are perfect for that and Soap Commander and the synthetics will make the lather as easy as it can be. I'm also using a different drug store after shave each morning before I head out. My After Shave of the Day this morning was Aqua Velva Musk. One of my favs.

As for the shave - two passes and very minimal touch up and the baby is in the house. With a bit of irritation from the Fatip and my hurrying. Some Nivea cured that and I feel great. I also threw together a simple shave picture showing my gear for the next three days. I'll do my best to keep up with the chatter on here but if I disappear for awhile you can rest assured I'm just helping another fine person buy the best sleep of their lives.

Oh, and the earlybird bonus for the sale today? One of my sales was to a customer who had just been shopping at my "other job" I turned down. Yep....they walked him, I sold him. Take THAT!! Hope you all have a great holiday weekend!

My opinion....

1) Schick gets the head angle correct, and as a result, the razor is intuitive and easy to use. You're exactly right.
2) Schick Injector blades approximate the correct skin feel for a straight razor quite closely. File that away for later.

I shaved again late this evening, using face lathered Martin de Candre. It's excellent soap - easy to lather, great protection and glide and a good, clean, well-hydrated but non-greasy postshave skin feeling. Two passes with the injector got me to a BBS and I used the soap as my postshave balm.
