Was over at my mom's for dinner a few weeks back. Was looking at some neat old displayed glass containers she had. I recognized the shape of one- She has a beautiful Pinaud glass bottle with matching glass stopper. Looks like 1930s or earlier. Is a dead ringer shape and ridges-wise for the Veg bottles now. I asked where she got it, she said an antique store in LaConner, Washington in the 1980s. She said it was rare to find one with the glass stopper still with it. I said I had some modern AS that would look good in it. Her response? You can have it when I die... I think I'm happy to wait a bit for it.
Went to tvbshaving. No message came up on individual products containing alcohol being restricted for shipping. YES! Searched for myrsol...they don't carry it. NO! Searched for Floid... 400ml of The Genuine came up. YES! Out of stock. NO! Connaught shaving won't ship overseas, either. I'm not cheap per se, just don't want to pay more than double for the same product. Have never tried either, so will cross them off the list for now and get another CL or Reserve (or two) leading into NB 18, which, unbelievably, I think I am going to try...
That's a stopper type where I'd make an exception. Pinaud's belong in glass. Avon products survive because of that. I have a couple Barbasol AS still in plastic that are doing OK. When my mom gifted me a set of Perfume funnels it made transfer an easy, less mess & waste process.
I might actually join you in NB 18, simply because I bought just about everything left on my Want list after falling off the NB 17 wagon...
Razor: Gillette 1930's OC Ball End Made in Canada Blade: Personna Tungsten 74 (16) Brush: Elite Razor Tres Amigo w/ Sunset Synthetic Soap: Jeeves of Hudson Street Private Study A/S: Floid Amber The Personna 74 is still holding up very well. The Elite razor brush with the Sunset knot is excellent.
Brian, don't you live down the street from the Jed and his family? They give skeet shooting lessons - shotgun, rifle, sling shot, whatever...
When I mentioned the NB 18 thing a month or so ago, my 30DC breathren/enablers/bootleggers/colleagues seemed to be somewhat unanimous on my inability to follow through. I have no idea why, but I suspect it has something to do with the 15 tubs/tubes of soaps, 16 razors, 600 blades, 9 AS bottles, 4 balms and 6 brushes I've accumulated since December of last year. Now, in all fairness, I paid more than $20CDN for only one of those vintage razors. Many were way less (did I mention my mint Aristocrat Jr. for $12CDN?). For the brushes, I only paid for the knots. 3 razors, 2 AS and 3 soaps came via trades for turned goods. Do trades count in a NB? Anyway, the madness needs to stop. One more order to fill in a few gaps (yes, there are some, believe it or not) later in the year and I'm good. I'm just stubborn enough to do it, I think. I already stopped looking at ebay several months ago. That won't be an issue. Antique stores? That could be a problem. I like to go into new ones I find on my journeys, for lots of things that aren't shaving related. An unobtanium item at a ridiculous price such as a mint Rubberset 400, or an OC TTO (thanks for that, Jim! @Norcalnewb), or an unopened Shulton box set of Old Spice AS for a few peanuts at a friendly 2nd hand store, and I'd happily cave.
Holy Smokes, Mr. Enabler! Didn't you read my previous rant? edit- I MIGHT have had a Le Pere Lucien soap in my Gifts and Care cart as well...
For the record, my understanding is that trades do NOT count in a NB. You can also declare a modified NB, such as excluding the purchase of knots for making or refurbishing brushes. I personally would have no problem with someone declaring an NB Retail -- swearing off the purchase of new items or of vintage on eBay while reserving the right to buy extremely cheaply priced vintage collectibles discovered in bricks and mortar antique stores or fleamarkets.
Sorry, I missed your rant and replied without reading the rest of the thread. Just be forewarned Enablers R Us does very little to help one stay on a NB pledge. I don't think trades count against you in NB.
