When I collected my mail on Monday, I found a surprise package -- a tub of Oleo Soapworks El Caballero shaving soap from
@Douglas Carey. Totally unexpected and absolutely delightful! Thanks, Doug!
Inspired by the soap, I decided to do a shave tonight with items connected to the 30DC. From the top:
1. The Gillette Slim I obtained in a trade with Chris
@SharptoothC after a discussion on this thread. I had it cerakoted by Delta Echo -- a company and a coating option I learned about here.
2. The blade is a Voskhod -- a brand I learned about on the 30DC. It was part of a 100-pack I won in a TSD raffle after Neal
@NCoxSTL donated them.
3. The brush was a trade/gift from Jason
@jtspartan. I learned about Maggards and about reknotting brushes here.
4. The soap was a gift from
@Douglas Carey. El Caballero is a mix of bay rum and a gentleman's cologne in scent.
5. I learned about using Alum as a rub here from Chris
@Bama Samurai. I think he may be the one who also taught me the trick of using a rubber band around the alum block to provide a secure grip against accidentally dropping and breaking it. This is my second alum block; I dropped and broke the first after reducing it to a sliver too thin for the rubber band to go around any more.
6. Florida Water is an aftershave I learned about here. For that matter, all the splashes and balms I use, including Thayers Witch Hazel, I learned about here. (The sole exception to that is Nivea Sensitive Balm.) Thanks to the 30DC, I now have about 25 splashes and balms to choose from.
7. The lather bowl is a repurposed horn drinking quaich. I learned about using larger lather bowls instead of a mug to help whip the lather here. For that matter, I learned about making proper lather here...
So there you go: a complete TSD shave. Thanks, everyone! I've learned a lot here and it's been a great deal of fun.
BTW, the shave was a good one. I made a "super goop" lather in the soap tub before transferring my brush to the lather bowl to finish (also a technique I learned here). The El Caballero not only smells great, it whips up a wonderful slick lather. Three passes later (riding the cap, skin stretching and using light pressure as per the 30DC mantra) and I am BBS.
