Nice write up Neal. Curious, do you get the chatter in only the Slim or is the chatter just greater in the Slim compared to the other TTO razors.?

The Mastro Livi razor is a working piece of art.:happy096:

I have enjoyed your reviews of the various samples. Thanks for taking the time to write them up. Congrats on the new razor. :happy088:

Even though the work week has gone by quickly, I do have to go in for at least part of the day. I am looking forward to celebrating Asha's 22nd birthday with her later this afternoon and then going out to for a birthday dinner. All the hardware and software worked well together resulting in another automatic near perfect shave. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the idea that our fathers had a different relationship with shaving. Based on vintage advertising, it seems like the goals were to make the process as safe as possible while being as effective/efficient as possible. While our fathers might have appreciated access to a variety of razor blades, they would probably not have understood the idea of a huge variety of shaving soaps. Those choices seemed to be more binary- with or without Menthol. The big exception was the variety of aftershaves available.

I also think our fathers may have had a different definition of a "good" shave and how to achieve it. For the average working man, the goal was probably a shave closer to a CCS and it was probably achieved using a single pass with a some amount of buffing and touchup, possibly without relathering. The common stereotype was the guy with toilet paper stuck to his various nicks. To a modern wet shaver, this suggests either systemic equipment faults (i.e., inferior blades) or systemic technique faults.

FWIW, my father was born in 1914 and died in 1981. His razor was a pre-War Fat Handled Tech which he finally gave up in the late 1960s in favor of a Techmatic. I don't know for certain that he didn't try other razors along the way, but the only other one that I remember seeing was a disused Blue Tip. Of course, now I'll probably spend the rest of the day wondering what came before the Tech. :)

This is just sad. Giving in to the man isn’t usually my style, but there were cookies involved, so...

I’m pretty sure if they watched this thread, they’d be shaking their heads at a lot more than three passes and pre shave oil. The finger shaver, blade epoxied to a sick (stivette), and paper clip shave come to mind.

Thanks for the tip. That does help.

Great looking pic and setup! I especially like the 8 ball.

A random cut seems pretty odd, Neal. Did you happen to check if the 1/4 turn lock was still in place?
An epic shave out of an epic razor, Keith!

    Astra SP
    RazoRock 'Son of Zeus'
    30DCLE (26mm Frigate Class)

With all of the MonoBilt love showing up on the forum I decided that I had to end the year and start the new year using my absolute favorite razor. Tossed in an Astra SP because I hadn't used one in a while and they are a damned good blade. Mmm Son of Zeus, based on Terre d’Hermès, has that deep earthy vetiver scent with orange and cedar undertones and was a fantastic choice for my shave this morning, performance was top notch as well! The MonoBilt did as the MonoBilt does and provided a 3 pass BBS with no touch up required. Even though it was a short work week I'm glad its Friday. Have a great weekend and Happy New Year everyone!

TGIF, BTW this little man is pulling himself up on his own! God help his mother and I.

    NCoxSTL AAACK!

We did start putting up disclaimers and "don't try this at home" type warnings. Kind of like Johnny Knoxville and the boys. It's fun to watch the potential train wreck. It might be even more fun to try the wreck. But if you have enough good sense you may never go there.

Yep. Everything was locked down and tight. It was a strange one, no doubt about that, which is why I have to think chatter. However, I'm not going to say my angle wasn't off. It's also possible I went high angle and caused it to dig in, though it didn't feel like that.

Pretty sure the turn-off for good sense was a couple of exits back. I’m still driving along writing limericks of the cookie revolution and imagining fuzzy’s qoutes being read in the voice of William Shatner.

This morning I pulled out the Pre De Provence 63 for further evaluation. (Not my favorite soap, but different and enjoyable nonetheless.) Lathered it up and was disappointed with the lack of slickness and smooth cutting of whiskers on the first pass. Tossed the old blade and put a new Voshkod in the Fatboy and added a tad of water to the lather. Much better. Still lacking a little slickness, but not bad. After 3 passes BBS- was the result, so it’s a little hard to whine about the soap. Seems like the water has to be dialed in just right, and a bit of irritation/dryness resulted. Maybe my reviews of 40+ soaps is making me very picky about my soaps (which sounds better if I label it “discerning” and use my best “pass the grey poupon” accent). Maybe I just need to work with triple milled soaps more. I dunno. Just not feeling the love on this one today. Having said that, I am clean, smooth, and smelling nice, so it’s hard not to call it a “win”. Anybody else have PdP thoughts here?

It is officially Friday with our little 30DC man photo. He has grown so much. You'll be amazed now how fast he is moving in a few weeks.
