Stayed on focus with the ‘crat jr, but went away from my sample focus to try a soap I got from my inlaws for Christmas. It is made by a well-established soap company and store in a hamlet about an hour or so away. They are known for their goat’s milk soaps and to be honest, I didn’t even know they made shaving soap. After reading the label, any excitement I had was quickly dissipated. No goat’s milk. How does a company that keeps goats on the roof of their shop (I can’t make this up) and has a goat on their label not have any goat milk or tallow in their soap? In reading the label, I had flashbacks to Prohibition Style- a whole bunch of oils including coconut, palm etc. I have no coconut scented soaps, so I guess getting to try something new is good. Also, it is a translucent soap. I’ve never had a shave soap that was clear before, only a few bar soaps.
The tub is also not a positive. It is a true 2 inch tub. No one who ever shaves would make a 2 in tub. Also, the instructions on the bottom said to spread a ‘thin’ layer of soap on the face. Again, I’m thinking Prohibition Style and a subtle warning that a thick lather won’t be possible.
All in all, I was not too stoked for my shave this morning, but a thoughtful gift is a thoughtful gift and I wanted to give it a go.
I chose the 30 DC as one of my two synthetic options as there was no way I was going to be able to get a big boar or badger into this tub. I had an awkward 30 second or so load, which was as messy as I anticipated, and then I took it to the bowl so that I could see what I was doing with this first lather. I was quite surprised- It took a lot more water than I thought it would, and produced enough thick lather for probably 6 passes. The scent was pleasant but a little weak.
The 3 pass shave was pretty routine. I finished with the Florida Water, because Why Not?. The face feel of the soap I would describe as average.
Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised, given that I had low expectations. I’d rate this soap as equal to others that give a nice lather without a lot of memorable properties, either in face feel, moisturizing, etc. Two that come to mind like that for me are TFS and Catie’s soaps. I might wander into that shop next time I drive through and enquire about a goat’s milk version.
The tub is still ridiculous, though.
Have a great day all!
