The VDH boar has a bad reputation for being a shedder. In my case, it was basically my only brush for over a year and had very little shedding. I put it aside when i got my first synthetic. When I went to pick it up again, it started shedding badly. It's almost like a very jealous girlfriend. It's fine until you pay attention to another brush and then it goes all to pieces. Technically, I'm guessing that the knot glue is fine as long as it is kept wet, but starts to fall apart if left to dry out for too long.
Could be what causes it. I do use mine regularly. I also have a surrey that was my grandads....the handle looks the same as a VDH. It has thinned some but still works up a good Williams lather.
I am way, way behind after being out of town for a few days. We went down to the Florida panhandle for a family vacation on Wednesday. On the way we stopped at a car dealership and ended up buying a Hyundai Santa Fe for my wife to replace her totaled vehicle from the wreck last month. Then we drove both vehicles on down to Florida. Good thing we did as yesterday I began to experience terrible stomach bug symptoms. It then hit other members of our party. All told six of got sick. So my wife took her car and jetted out of there a little early since our little boy had it on Christmas day. So it's been an eventful few days! I shaved a couple of times with Mitchell's Wool Fat but never took a picture. I'll be back in the regular routine early next week.
I had to deal with it a couple of nights last week. Did not miss work but it was tough. Glad you made the trip safely too.
Sounds like an exciting trip, Perry. I hope everyone is recovering from the bug. We have had a few cases of it here as well, and it isn't fun.

SOTD 12.30.2017 Pre-shave: black coffee, snow shoveling, more black coffee and a hot shower Brush: Barburys by Sibel synthetic Soap: Williams Razor: Gillette E-4 Fatboy (set to #6) Blade: Wilkinson-Sword (2) Post-shave: Dickinson's Original WH, Nivea Sensitive Skin PS Balm, Stetson Cooling Moisture AS I had a late in the day shave, reaching for the Williams puck after seeing so many others using it the last couple of days. I soused the puck in hot water while I showered and poured some of the souse water into my Suribachi bowl to pre-moisten it. I just kept this brush dry as I started to load the brush. This worked very well as I transferred the soap lather to the bowl and continued to build it for another minute. This is either the 3rd or 4th time I've used this brush and I have yet to lose any fibers from it. It's soft yet has good backbone to it. I had a nice 2 pass face shave with some clean-up on my neck. I couldn't declare BBS due to some stubborn growth on my neck but it was a DFS overall. I hope all of you are having great shaves and a great day!

Final shave 2017 To wrap up decadent December I went with a hot shave, boiled some water in kettle, broke out some QCS and my big soft elk antler silver tip from Gem Star Customs. This PRC has a beautiful Damascus pattern and had a wonderful edge, a decadent shave indeed. Happy New Year!
