Another Outing with the ATT SE G1, after disappointing initial Shaves and talks with Stan at ATT , I shimmed the blade to increase aggression which resulted in a decent Shave. Today I used a trimmed down 1/2 spine from a Gem Blade, which increased the aggression a bit more.

This time one was more aware of Razor, and the blade feel was good. The Razor needed to be handled like a Vintage SE, but was quite smooth and I was very pleased with the quality of the finished Shave.

Okay, I used the Kampfe Star razor today and it was loaded with a freshly honed wedge blade. I survived it and gained some insight on what men from the 1880s - 1890s must have experienced.

First is that the head of the razor is huge in relation to any other razor I’ve used. It can be a bit hard to see around. There’s no riding the cap with this baby because there’s no cap.

The moment you begin the first stroke, you realize this is not your father’s razor. I took slow but deliberate strokes so I could get a better feel on what I was dealing with. Now I use straight razors on the weekends and days off from work, so I know the feel of straight razors well. The Kampfe with the wedge blade gave me much the same feel and feedback. Actually, the feedback from this razor is somewhat muted compared to a straight.

The neck went well and so did the cheeks. The chin was a different story. I had to stretch the skin to get any sort of proper cutting action going. I did nick my chin. Nothing bad. My upper lip area was okay, but I couldn’t get around and under my nose very well.

I lathered up again and did a second pass. The second pass went better than the first and I had less drama. Overall, I had a fun shave and ended with a DFS.

I’m going to hone the blade again for the next use as it did tug a bit. Also, I need to compare my razor to other Kampfe razors as I’m curious about blade alignment.

If this were 1880 and all I had ever used were straight razors, this razor would have been a big deal. First, it’s a real work of art and an engineering marvel. Secondly, the wedge blade is just a mini straight razor. Shaving with this is faster than using a straight razor and I’m much less likely to cut myself due to the design.

Maintenance is the same as the wedge blades must be honed. If I were a straight razor convert, then I would already have the stones to hone. On the other hand, the need to hone the blades would have been a chore. It’s actually easier to hone a straight razor than a little wedge blade. I also see how King Gillette took advantage of that weakness in the shaving systems of the day. People wanted convenience in their busy lives.

I’ll try the Kampfe with the wedge blade again next week. Yes, I do like this razor and it was fun stepping back in time this morning.

Tomorrow I will be shaving with my first wedge. I am the first on the list of the Wedge Pass Around over at TOST. @twhite is the responsible enabler. The package arrived and you can read all about it here: http://jrshaving.blogspot.com/2018/01/the-wedges-have-landed.html
I realized that the wedge would fit on my lather catcher, so I will be doing my first shave with my Gem Jr. 1911 lather catcher and the Hecknel wedge.

    wchnu Duck Season!

Wonderful write up. I felt much the same with my first wedge shave! Now pop a treet into that one. I bet you love it!!

Good is not the word for it. SE shaves simply rock. That is the same head as my favorite bakelite handle 1912. I love the baton handle too.

My shave today. Barber Saloon soap..1907ish ER with a treet...JR137 and British Sterling AS. woooook.

    Barbasol AS

I started off with Proraso Pre Shave. The Colgate Mug Shaving Soap face-lathered well with the Jayaruh #144 badger brush. I did two passes with the Gem 1911 Lather Catcher Razor with an Henckels wedge blade and ended up with a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Thayer's Lemon WH and then Barbasol AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...
