Hi new to straight razors. Bought a razor last week for 10 bucks but don't know anything about it or where to find info on it. Says superior razor Solingen Germany. Black scales with yellowish spacer. Blade is .620 inch with rounded heel and square toe. Thanks for any help. Al
BTW, welcome to The Shave Den. Why don't you wander over to the Welcome Center, and introduce yourself.
Hmmm... it looks like that razor could use a little TLC. @DaltonGang is just the man to give you some pointers. He does miracles with neglected straights.
Its Been a Good Solingen Razor in its Day..Hard to Comment by Pics But there is a More than a Fair Bit of Corrosion & Rust around the Bevel Area..And Further Up..Its a Thinner Full Hollow & Maybe Corroded Beyond Reasonably Being Worth the Bother..Maybe..Maybe Not.. The Corrosion on the Edge isnt the Immediate Problem as that Can be Honed Out..A Potential Issue by Lookin at it..There May be Further Corrosion Further Up..In Other Words..Preventing a Corrosion or Pitting Free Bevel..There are Plenty of Clean Razors on EBay for a Few Dollars More..Personally I Would HATE Getting that Razor to Hone..They Just Sometimes Aint Worth the Time & Effort in that Kinda Nick.. But..Hey..Thats Me Talkin.. Billy..
That one is definitely a project razor. That rust on the edge is concerning. You won't know how deep it goes, until it's sanded and buffed out. Well, it might need some serious bevel work, to get to Good steel. I've seen much worse. It's just a little time consuming, but worth it when it's all done.
Thanks. Yes needs a bit of love for sure but hope to get it back to her former glory. Would like to know manufacture and date
Definitely a project razor, you might want to consider purchasing a shave ready razor and have that has your project razor, I know I have several waiting on me to do.
I'd start HERE for historical data. That being said, there's no listing for the brand name. Could be one of the many No-Name razors around. Nothing wrong with that, and after a clean up you'll know if it's a good bit of steel.
Thanks guys the only one with that name that i could find was Dovo but otherwise superior razor was Sheffield. I have another razor that i have been working on that had nicks in the edge and rust got the nicks out and working on the bevel now
best pic I have of it from 8 years ago I remember it was marked "Superior" and Solingen sorry I don't have any more for you
