Ugh. I’m unable to keep up this month. You folks are quite chatty! At present, I have about 460 messages more to read through before I’m caught up!
At the beginning of this month, I began a soap focus. I gave myself a hypothetical scenario - basically the deserted island thing, where I can only take the minimum. The parameters were simple. I can take one razor, one brand/style of blade, and one soap. The soap choice can be made from one of the following:
Arko, MWF, Tabac, or Williams
I’m sticking with a Gillette Slim and Astra S/Ps for the month. So far, I’ve only used a Simpson Commodore brush, however I won’t guarantee that I’ll run it for the duration.
I just finished my last shave on Saturday using Arko. I began using MWF Sunday morning.
I’ve already ruled Arko out. Yeah, I know that I haven’t gotten to the other soaps yet - so how can I kick one to the curb before I do? Well, I’ve used all the other soaps before, so I pretty much know what to expect from each. I’ve never used one of these soaps for a week straight before though. I want to give each one its due. Arko was a “flyer” for this focus. I didn’t figure that it would “make the cut”, but I needed four soaps - and, every so often, you can be surprised.
Why is Arko out? Post shave feel. That’s all it comes down to. Arko just doesn’t leave your face soft, or feel as nice as the other ones in the lineup. No doubt, Arko is a very good soap. It’s been around quite awhile. It’s used, and loved, by many people. It’s also disliked by many, generally because of the scent. Myself, I like the scent. It reminds me of an old school laundry detergent. While Arko will never be billed as a luxury soap, you can certainly spend a lot more money and get a soap that isn’t as good.
As many of you already know, the performance of Arko is way above its price point. It face lathers quickly and easily. It is a thirsty soap, though. When I think I’ve added enough water, I’ll add a little more. I have no problems having enough in the brush for three passes, and even a pass on the back of my neck. All in all, it was a nice week of shaves.
Off to catch up….or, at least try! Keep up the good work guys! Even though keeping up is difficult, I’m glad to see this thread so active!
