Change of Weather Edition



Taking some time off from the prairie, caught a nice two pass Luxor DFS. This week I am shaving after lunch and before nap time. Yep. Catching a little Pura Vida in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. The weather is amazing, the land lush, drinks cold and the food nourishing...exactly what is needed at this time. Picked up some Proraso Green AS Lotion...and I love it. Reminds me of Myrsol a bit, or like more eucalyptus AV. It's going to stay around in my rotation. Hope everyone has a great Wednesday, though I confess...I don't actually know if it's Wednesday or not. That's how relaxed I am at this time. All I know is that dinner is at 7. Other than that...all is quiet in Chacarita, CR.

A used lathe is probably a good idea. Even a decent smaller lathe like a 13" Delta is close to $700 USD now. Also, with getting a used lathe you might have a chance to get tools and accessories thrown in, and those are hidden costs- the high speed tools aren't cheap now, and you need a scraper or two, plus at least one gouge (or more), maybe a skew chisel and a parting tool. It can add up. You will need a chuck as well. I have a 4 jawed chuck, but a simple screw chuck could work in a pinch. For shaving brushes, or small similar work, a set of expanding collet chucks would be ideal (I'm thinking of one of those myself). I'd guess that a used lathe would potentially come with some of those necessities as well.

Years ago, you could buy it in bulk in my neck of the woods.

Thanks Jason! It’s been enjoyable so far, and the shaves have been quite good. Guess there’s something to this whole rule/focus stuff after all.

Ah yes, sometimes stereotypes are close to the truth...those guys are what happened with Bob and Doug Mackenzie grew old.
I’ve actually seen larger turnings that that. The fellow who taught me how to turn wood would turn very large platters and bowls on an ‘outward’ lathe- the belt drive turned backwards and the tool supported with a large stand. He actually had a scraper that he mounted on a rifle stock to handle the force that would be exerted on the outside of a 2’ wide piece of rough wood. It isn’t about the horsepower, it is about the RPMs- the farther from centre, the faster it moves.

Switching to the Semogue 620 and Jeeves of Hudson Street Bay Rum soap. Fine lather. Quick and easy with the small boar. Love it.

Two passes and touch up with the Astra SP in the Fattie for a near baby finish. Great finish to a somewhat busy and stressful day.

Arko and MWF are both excellent soaps. I agree with you on choosing MWF over Arko. Better after shave skin feel as well as that scent. Brothers from a different mother.

Shave 13 went well, DFS, no weepers, little out of the alum. Really got my angle of attack down pretty well, just need to really focus on minimal pressure. Once I get the pressure completely figured out, I think I will have this razor perfected. Got the lather on this Tabac really figured out, and it's working great. You're the one who inspired this focus. I still have a week each with Tabac and Williams. I really do like Arko...the scent and the performance are both very good, as far as I'm concerned. But, MWF...the post shave feel is fantastic. And I like that fresh, clean scent. Their bath soap is quite nice too. That reminds me....I need to order more!
