@Mike Brown contacted me about making him a big boar brush: 30mm. I looked around and found that Whipped Dog had a 30mm boar, so we decided to go ahead. I gave him a choice of some woods, and he chose locust wood. So, I got the knot ordered and then started in on the handle. He wanted it in the style of his JR#37. So here is how it went (so far). Here is the blank ready for the lathe. Loaded up on the lathe and ready to go. Here it is mostly done. You will notice on the left that I have turned it down to 30mm. That will be my guide for the hole. Here it is fresh off the lathe. Here I have drilled the hole out with a 1 inch Forstner bit. I used a drum sander to open the hole to 30mm. I made a backup handle, and Mike will get the better one, or the one he likes best. Here I have put the first coat of Polycrylic on the handles. Well, that's all I have now. Just waiting on the knot from Whipped Dog. I also ordered a 30mm synthetic Black and White from Maggards. I will put it in the other handle. Thanks for watching.
The knot arrived today, and I finished up the brush. The first picture is a dry fitting of the knot. The handle is 71mm. The knot measures 30x57mm. Next, I glued the knot in with epoxy. Finally, I washed the knot with Oxi Clean. The knot is very soft for a boar. I did not notice any unusual natural smells. After rinsing, I treated it with some American Crew Hair Conditioner. I rinsed it again and towel dried the brush. This is going to be a great brush to lather with I believe. It will be going home after it dries.
