Just a question, i was in a "we buy gold" shop which i guess moonlights as an antique store, went in to buy my monthly silver bars as silver is at a decent price for me and have done well in the past. Anyways in one of the cases they had a single ring that looked to be in mint condition, case, 2 blade cases, everything looked unused, no cracks or scratches on the razor or case. They are asking 75 usd for it, my friend is debating picking it up and neither of us know much about this razor. I know that any razor is worth what you are willing to pay for it, but do the fine folks here feel 75usd is a decent price? He also had two techs, gold plated that also looked to be in perfect condition. And the barbershop next door had a fatboy in their display case but not for sale. Actually today was the first time i have seen anything other then over priced straights and techs, the shop accross the street had a full chess set of the avon aftershaves to which i had to talk myself out of because they had a few bottles of olan which i seem to never be able to fine, sorry for rambling.
$75 makes my tummy hurt ... alot! I just turned down a nearly mint NEW in it's original red case and blade case for $18. Would I enjoy it? Sure. Can I do better? Undoubtably! Live for the hunt!!!!!
I've seen more or less full sets show up on an auction site (not the bay so the prices are better). If you are thinking about wanting the decanters send me a PM. These are unknowns as far contents since it's a "lot sale", but would make an interesting display.
Im not looking for the whole set, i enjoy spicy and have stocked up a lot, wild country is decent and i have 3 full decanters, this set had oland which i can never seem to locate but the guy wasnt willing to break them up.
From a 2 minute "completed (and sold) items" search on ebay, I would say $75 for that razor is reasonable, provided it's in very good condition. There are some going low ($20-30) for good pieces, but razor only. There are some poor/average condition sets going for $50-60, and obviously some mint which sell to collectors for more.
A good question to ask yourself would be "Why do you want it?" Are you looking you build a collection? If yes, is this razor mint enough that you'd keep this example forever, or would you end up looking for a better one. If it's as good as can be, $75 may be a small price to pay for a lifelong collectors piece. If you are not collecting, do you need to pay premium prices for all of the stuff that comes with it? Would you be just a happy with a great example at a lower price, sans case etc??
Well i dont buy razors to collect but to use, so im not interested in higher end vintage, nor am i interested in cases. If i buy vintage which i do i get something i plan on using, i dont want my bathroom looking like a museum with display cases and stuff. My friend is just getting in to wet shaving and does not own vintage gillette yet, so he was considering getting it.
In that case, you can find a user grade for $20 or less. Sounds like what is needed right now. Those old types can be brutal if you don't know about "riding the cap."
The answer is not that easy. There are factors to consider and I think it depends on the set your looking at. I believe some single rings warrant that price while others don’t. Do you know which set it is? Can you describe the case? I sold quite a few sets from the the small leather cases to the large leather travelers sets. Then there are the metal cases the small ones and the square larger one. The square larger metal case sell for higher than the standard set.. same goes for the traveler selling for more than the standard set.. but not as much as the early standard set that has script or the ribbon..
From a pure collectors prospective sound like a good deal - mint? In my travel's I'm still waiting to stray upon a similar deal. Generally it seems I only find very used Super Speeds, Techs or a Rolls or two.
I think basically the answer is that your friend should look for something in good condition but maybe without a case, which would be a significantly better deal on a razor intended for use. Unless he just really really wants it.
i am lucky to own a few near mint razors.they were there and the price was right.i don t usually buy razors that need replating. i am not so interested in gold razors, but the 2 u.s. crats i purchased were near unused. with the light use i will give them they should last awhile.
This one looked unused, i will probably go back later in the week and get a picture, i have never seen a razor look this good in person. Just 75 bucks for a razor seems steep, i have been holding out on getting a fatboy, which is really the only other razor I really want, im just hoping their popularity fades so i can get one at a decent price. The ones in my price range never have a good description and no pictures showing the doors open.
i don t think fatboy prices will drop very soon. all the nice ones that i have purchased have been in the $80-100 range with case..
If people keep buying them as "collectibles" to live in drawers, as many seem to do, then yes you're right.
It depends on the condition you are looking for. I have bought and sold a lot of fat boys and I’ve never paid more than $45. A lot of them have been just ok and some have been in excellent condition. A lot of my fatboy purchases have been on average $25. I wouldn’t pay more that $40-$50 for cased one in great condition.
i was always looking for very good to mint, no brassing, or functional problems . i also didnt spend alot of time looking. just picked the best looking with most pictures at the time i was shopping for one.. my g-2 , first fatboy $40 bargain look decent , but was bent. ,second g-2 looked nice, doors misaligned. third f-2 $85 with case, really clean, no issues , looks unused, not replated. thats the one i kept.
i didn t spend a lot of time..but gained a good eye for faulty examples.as a mechanic i can repair minor flaws but would rather just purchase a mint one and maintain it.i use all my razors , mint , nos or other..
