OCtober Focus Stirling~~Rubberset~~Gillette~~Personna 74~~Murray & Lanman To start the month off right, I chose my oldest piece of equipment: 1908 Gillette Old Single Ring. Now, I have never really appreciated the differences between open and closed comb DE razors. Some gents say it helps alleviate "clogging" during the shave, but the easier and more beneficial solution for that is to properly hydrate the soap. Soap too thick? Soap not slick. There is a real chance when using tallow soaps such as the Stirling line. Similar to Mystic Water, the "photo-lather" (not sure I like that term) is about as gooey as they come. Chatillon Lux is another one (Bison tallow, BTW), that is incredibly sticky and gooey at first. I worked the Stirling for a considerable amount of time with my Rubberset, using my Aesop SS bowl, clearing the breach twice along the way. Great results. SUPER shiny and ultra slick. Even the >10x used Personna 74 slid along nicely. Two observations I can make about the OC Gillette (besides the obvious beauty): 1) Unforgiving angle. Lose it and pay the price. 2) Blade alignment MUST be checked before shaving. No issues today. BBS in 3 Finished a chilly shave with my even-chillier Florida Water.
Glad to see you back, Keith! Hope you had a great trip! Excellent shot, Perry! Amazing shot, Jim! Excellent start to the month, Randy! Some great razor porn too! Beautiful setup Jason! It makes my heart sing every time I see your MonoBilt! You started with the best Gillette OC, John!
Thus far, the closest I've come to out-reviewing him is when I do my "Sentence form" Shaves/Showers Of The Day. I suppose it's time to focus more on "Paragraph form".
From the movie Deadpool; Wade: "We're like two jigsaw pieces-weird curvy edges." Vanessa: "Put them together and you can see the picture on top." Glad you're here with the rest of us weird curvy folks. We deserve each other! I saw Neal had a sample of Mystic Water Raspberry Lemon. That soap tempts me to take a taste every time I use it. As I recall they reformulated in a good way improving the lathering ability for hard water shavers.
Thanks for the comments guys. This whole group of enablers is really excellent at encouraging each other to buy and display stuff. Along those lines, the SOC mixed brush is better each day it breaks in. As with most boars, the scritchiness is changing to softness over time, and the dense feel provided by the badger hair combined with the backbone of the boar is awesome. I'm really enjoying this knot.
No I don’t. It came with the Probak head fitted to it, and since both seemed in matching condition, I just assumed they belonged together without really thinking about it. And that the Gillette New Improved Tuckaway handle looked identical because Gillette reused the handle design (and manufacturing dies) obtained when it bought out the Probak Razor Co. But it seems that's wrong...
SOTD OCtober 1st Stirling Mentholated Pre-S have Soap Above The Tie Atlas H2 Gillette 7O'Clock Permasharp Stainless (4) Epsilon White Horse Hair (26mm Fan knot, Frigate Class) Stirling Vanilla Sandalwood Stirling Glacial Unscented PSB mixed with The Blades Grim Smolder AS Ahh OCtober, may favorite theme month. Last time I shaves was Thursday of last week. Four days growth, no problem for any open comb. But I choose the most aggressive OC that I own, the ATT H2. Four days stubble wiped away in a single pass. I could have stopped at two passes for a very high grade DFS but I had a bowl full of Stirling super goop left after the second pass. The third pass annihilated any hint of stubble that remained. I finished with a mixture of Stirling Glacial Unscented PSB & The Blades Grim Smolder AS for the perfect sweet and spicy face freeze! Have a great Monday my friends!
