  5. Hello Michael and welcome! I see you've got some good advise and generous offers already. It's hard to give you advice on something that you've never done before with equipment that you haven't touched yet. Once you get your new gear and have your first shave be sure to ask questions, we can help guide you from there.
Great shave Neal, and Happy Belated Birthday!
The sheer level of awesomeness and cool factor that an OC brings to the table. that is all!
Great shot Jim! Is that the original DOC ?
Stunning photo, Jim! Did we time warp to MAYhem ?
Beautiful shot, Clint! Here's to a better shave tomorrow!
You, voluntarily taking a day shift job? The world as I know it has changed.
  6. Thanks, Andrew. I don't know if it was Mayhem worthy but it felt pretty rough.

  8. @Michael Bilyard - here's a photo to illustrate why we prefer wet to dry shaving. On the left is a hair shaft cut with a razor blade in the double edge style. A clean slice. If done in the Techniques we all try to do every shave ; Ride the cap, Less pressure, and Skin stretching.
    hair razor versus electric.gif
The right photo shows how an electric frazzles the end of a hair shaft. Those pesky shaving bumps can happen when that ragged hair is cut below the skin surface and can't find it's way out. The problem with cartridge and electric razors - you have to mash them against your skin to get a close shave. When using a DE (double edge), SE (single edge), or SR (straight razor) using just enough pressure to wipe away the lather cuts the hair cleanly and not below the skin surface.

That Riding the cap thing is about how the blade makes contact with your beard. Many Cartridge and electrics have flippy floppy heads with fancy guards or lube strips. These are so you don't have to adjust your razor to follow the curves of your face. The Top of a DE razor is the cap and by keeping that against your skin (instead of the guard bar below the blade) you are hold the blade in it's best cutting angle. Better cutting means less passes resulting in less irritation and bumps.

That third Technique - Skin stretching - may help you by flattening the plains of your skin. It's really important when you get like us Oldbies and have loose or wrinkled skin. Razor in one hand, using your other hand you pull the skin taunt like a drum head. Flat tight skin shaves easier than loose, curved surfaces.

I know that's a lot of info for someone who hasn't yet shaved. When you get your gear and nick up your face the first time some of it will make sense.

    Stirling Mentholated Pre-Shave Soap
    Gillette ABC OT Pocket Edition
    Treet New Steel (3)
Yaqi Barber Pole (24mm, Frigate Class)
    Stirling Vanilla Sandalwood
P&G Old Spice in Shulton decanter

My shave this morning featured the my new Yaqi Barber Pole brush with the new Mew Brown synthetic knot (called Synbad by APS). The fibers of this knot are much finer then the Tuxedo and have a springyness to them that gives the knot more backbone feel while being super soft. This knot is both softer then my sunrise synthetic and has more backbone, I like it! This brush was able to really dig into the heavily soused and boomed Vanilla Sandalwood with a super goop load I took the brush to my scuttle to incorporate some additional water before taking it to my face where I worked in even more water. The OT made quick work of my weekend bead growth and after three passes I was DFS but I decided to chase the baby with a touch up pass and caught him! I finished with a splash of P&G Old Spice, out of a vintage Shulton decanter. Interestingly the P&G OS picked up a bit of the Shulton vibe from the decanter, another win! Have a great Monday my friends!
