This one is solid resin with a nice shape and weight. My Omega 49 was hollow plastic. Zenith makes some plastic handle brushes at a price similar to Omega 49 prices. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wednesday October 10 Gillette Ball End Old Type / Astra SP ( 3) APShaveCo U - Brush with 24mm Flat Top knot Hendrix Classics Barbershop soap Alum and Hendrix Classics Barbershop balm test sample Another day, another previously untested Old Type. This one is dated 1918 and is nickel plated. The plating is in great shape on the handle and not bad on the head - the baseplate nickel is complete as is the underside of the cap, but the top of the cap shows bare brass on both ends. Unfortunately, this razor was the first of my Old Types or NEWs to give me a poor shave. The reason? The top cap is warped. I had trouble getting the blade edges to sit straight along the teeth. When I looked at the razor edge-on before using it, I noticed a distinct wow in the blade on both sides. At some point, the top cap was slightly but perceptibly bent at the centre screw, giving the blade edge on both sides a definite bow shape. I tried shaving with the razor anyway. I found it had a greatly increased blade presence towards the middle and worked best if I tried to keep just half the length of the blade in contact. I finished one pass without blood and called it quits with a decent CCS. Presentable in public but definitely not up to my now normal shave standard. The alum was a bit warm but not as bad as I expected. The rinse and balm cooled everything off. I looked at the top cap but doubt it can be flattened out again. I may try setting it on my vice so the screw and posts are hanging down and the sides of the cap are supported on the flat vice jaws and then hit it with a rubber-tipped hammer. That's about the only thing I can think of and I doubt it will do much. But otherwise, this century-old veteran is just a parts razor now.
Great write up John. To bad about the top plate being damaged. On the bright side the shave was blood free.
I am going to mix my two nickel-plate 1918-dated Old Types together to get the best possible razor out of them. Today's has a great bottomplate with straight teeth and perfect plating but a warped topcap, and yesterday's has a good topcap with not bad plating but the bottomplate has a bent tooth. I am not sure which handle has the smallest, most stable cracks.
Well, I have one very good Old Type (I will test it tomorrow) and one MayHEM candidate. I tried flattening the warped edges of the topcap. They are now straight but the overall curve of the topcap is now flatter and no longer matches the baseplate. The razor blade sticks out almost straight about a millimeter above the comb. Talk about blade gap! The parts razor is a more elegant version of the blade-on-a-bolt. I think I am ready for next year's MayHEM or Cinco di Julio -- if I am professional enough to run this rig...
Tonight’s shave Shumate tungsteel Perfect three pass shave. Surprisingly enough I didn’t have any weepers like I was expecting, since I let my beard grow out for a week after the close filet o face last Wednesday’s shave with the razorock jaws. I figured I’d use a razor that I’ve never cut myself with to whack down a weeks gtowth.
Thank you, it’s a vintage razor. From what I’ve found it’s from around 1904-1920. It’s one of the best shaving and easiest to shave with razors I have.
OCtober 10th NEW SC w Vintage ‘Spoiler’ (4) Jeeves Key Lime SS WD HM Badger/Cypress Thayers Elvado Lime&Mint ASB Shaved early this morning, but had a very long day at work and am just getting a chance to post now. Another good shave this morning with the NEW. The Spoiler is going great still and the Jeeves is one of my favourite lathers. I hadn’t grabbed the Key Lime in awhile and it is a pleasant enough scent. The Elvado is just a ‘Meh’ product, and I think I’ll take it to the Lake for the summer next year; that would be a fine use for it. Have a great night all, and I guess it is only 9 hours or so until I get to shave and post again.
You look tired, Andrew. I remember the days of having two kids as babies as well, and I hope you and your wife can find a chance for a rest, and for each other!
How did I miss this post? I like the idea. I wouldn't make it all that far into the year. Well, not as far as some anyway. But I like the idea and the rotation through collections would be interesting to see!
OCtober Oleo and Odd Balls!! October 10 Razor - OCMM Blade - (1) Soap - Oleo Soapworks El Caballero Brush - Stirling Pro Style Synthetic Post - Alum Time to change razors and it's the Micromatic Open Comb. A little SE love in OCtober. Treet Super carbon blade and El Caballero and the big Stirling synthetic for the lather. This was just a repeat of the great shaves this razor delivered in SEptember, though the alum was just a bit warm. That can happen with the OCMM. The finish was BBS, though, so I'm not complaining one little bit. Fine shave with a fine setup tonight. I took the night off from running around the mean streets. I'm off tomorrow and need to run a few errands to get ready for this weekend. Hope you had a great Hump Day and the good news is....the week is half over for most of us!
