Lakewood Soap Co. | Sweet Orange Chili Pepper
    RazoRock 400 | Noir Plissoft
    Ever-Ready SE | Gem PTFE

A few weeks back, someone featured Lakewood Soap Company's "Sweet Orange Chili Pepper" in their SOTD pic, and I was intrigued by the potential of the fragrance. Given I'd not heard much about Lakewood---good or bad---I was anticipating an average performer at best.

Frankly, I'm surprised by the lack of hype for this base. Granted, this was my first use of Lakewood, and I straight cold used it for a 48-hour growth, head and face shave. There was no customary test lather, but rather straight to the shower shave. To my surprise, this is a very nice performing soap. My hard water provided the usual challenge with loading which simply means I have to load bit longer than if I were using distilled or soft water. This first go yielded a density that does not quite stand up to the creamy luxury strata of the current highest-end bases, but I'll trade density for glide any day. Fortunately, Lakewood has both primary and residual slickness in spades. I was able to comfortably take long sweeping against-the-grain passes on my scalp from the residual slickness alone. The post-shave is quite nice as well, such that in future uses I may very well consider skipping a post-product to test its longevity.

Sweet Orange Chili Pepper delivers precisely what you'd expect: an initial sweet, but natural, orange with hints of chili towards the end of the shave. I would like to have experienced a bit more of the chili aspect, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The scent strength is just a step above light, and this may be a characteristic of the accord alone.

The balm is very thick, bordering on paste, but easily distributable on my towel dried scalp and face. So far it seems to be doing its job leaving a soft, well-hydrated, silky feel completely devoid of any residual greasiness. The balm is quite similar in consistency to that of Lather Bros., but I think Lakewood's performs a bit better. I used the balm a few times last week just as a post-shower moisturizer and can affirm the scent longevity is roughly 3 hours. The scent is the same except for the addition of something faintly green in the dry down. Perhaps the chili comes through a skosh better as well.

I hadn't intended to drop a review tonight, but I was so impressed with this lesser known artisan that I felt compelled to share my initial impressions. I'm going to explore more of their offerings, because given tonight's outcome, I intend to wedge Lakewood into my rotation somehow.

My shaves never vary too much as I only have a handful of razors, soaps and brushes but damn this might be one of the best shaves in my den. Perfect way to end the day.

    OCtober Oleo and Odd Balls!!

    October 17

    Razor - Gillette NEW LC
    Blade - [IMG] (3)
Soap - Oleo Soapworks El Caballero
    Brush - 30 DC LE
    Post - Alum

Third shave on the New LC and Sharp Star and the soap is back to Oleo. I normally do the first shave with it this month (per razor) but didn't take it with me to Kansas. So, it got the third shave on the razor. The more I use it the better I appreciate its qualities. Slick, plenty of cushiness, and their take on the Bay Rum scent with this one isn't half bad. Thinking about a few samples from them perhaps. Maybe. We'll see.

Three passes to the baby again tonight as the lather from the LE brush lasted that plus had plenty left over. Enjoyable shave to finish the day. Two days off now, after working one so I can't complain about that schedule. Have a fantastic Thursday!

    Cold Water Wash
    Tabac
    Jayaruh #47 Synthetic
    Valet VB2
    Feather FHS-10
    CWR
    Tabac AS

My prep was just a cold water rinse. The Tabac Shaving Soap face lathered well with the Jayaruh #47 Synthetic brush. I did two passes with the Valet VB2 Safety Razor with a Feather FHS-10 SE blade and ended up with a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Tabac AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...
