What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Den folks! Today really has no news, but no news is NEWS!

Shave #50 on the Filly 14 DT edge test, and there’s not much to report which is significant because the other razor I tested, a Cape 1000 Swedish steel is ‘supposedly’ harder steel and should hold an edge longer, yet 50 comfortable shaves was about it for the Cape, while the Filly soldiers on. I actually pushed the Cape to 58 shaves but the last ones were not that great. Still, at 50 shaves in the Filly is noticeably better, though it is not freshly honed smooth, but I would not expect it to be.

The stropping has been 35/65 suede/cordovan and the strop has been a Kanoyama 80000 or 30000. I’ve also noticed that the Filly hasn’t needed the occasional canvas to bring the edge back up as often. Soaps have mostly been one of the Italian creams/soaps, usually SMN, AdP, or ABC. With an occasional ‘other’ soap thrown in but not often.

So why should a less hard razor hold up longer than a harder one? Beats me, but maybe the harder steel is more brittle at the edge? Maybe a given amount of stropping doesn’t affect hard steel as much as softer steel? Filarmonica also made harder razors, the Sub-Cero and Novodur for example, but I don’t have one of those.
