According to Waits "Safety Razor Compendium", the Berkeley trademark was first registered for blades in 1937. Nothing much listed for Consolidated Razor Blade Co Inc otherwise. No indication the company lasted beyond the 1940s or so. Therefore, chances are, those are carbon steel blades that are 70+ years old.

So give them a try but don't be shocked if they give you a very rough shave.

    Decadent December !!!

My, my, my what a day. Just ended and I have decided the most decadent thing I can do tonight is a shot of Colorado Rye Whiskey and read up on some of the fine shaves you guys have had today and just let a no-shave night be the perfect end to this one. Next setup of the month will be waiting for me tomorrow night. Besides, that will give my face an extra day to get over its somewhat tough couple of days on the Durasharp blade.

    Have a fantastic Tuesday everyone!!

I checked for the Havorford as well since it is the same scent as the LE I picked up from him here in STL. I'll just have to make the LE last until he brings it back again.

If anyone uses a 70 year old carbon blade and swears it was a great smooth shave -------well------I won't say they're lying, but I would accuse them of embellishing the experience a bit. I know I've tried the old Gillette Blue Blades a couple of times and tried every trick I could think of to smooth them out. No real improvement, unfortunately. I also suspect, though, that in addition to the natural loss of edge that carbons go through do to the environment, that the edges on those old blades weren't nearly as sharp as the newer blades.

Water can certainly make a difference, especially the hardness or softness of the water. However, it is the technique that will ultimately determine success. I'll give you at least 80% of the credit. We'll let the water suffer with 20%.

I have not heard of them but am curious as to how they do after all these years. I'm thinking it will be less than good, based on discussions that have already taken place about them.

Can't see me trying them, I'll just preserve them for conversation pieces. Can only imagine what shaving must have been like back in the day. Thanks guys for the info.

I missed your original post about your wife @jtspartan. (The rest of these guys are kind of “Chattie Cathies” if you hadn’t noticed.). Regardless, you guys are in our prayers this week.

    Welcome back, Keith!
    Very nice, Rick!
Nice shave, Gary. I never thought I would be a daily shaver. As I've said before I liked being clean shaven but I didn't enjoy the process. Shaving has now become something I look forward to.

Prep: Cold water and Stirling mentholated pre-shave soap
    Blade: vintage Personna Ultra Chrome
    Razor: Schick I1
    Brush: Zenith B02 boar
    Soap: Stirling Haverford
Post: Witch hazel, Stirling Haverford aftershave

Well, interesting morning so far. We've had lots of rain the past three days and there was a little snow mixed in late yesterday in some areas. Then temperatures went below freezing and there was a chance for black ice on the roads. Then we wake up this morning to a freezing fog advisory. I get showered and shaved and dressed as normal and then get the notification that school will be delayed by two hours due to the road conditions. So, I'm basically ready to go and now I have two more free hours.

The shave was nice and easy. Tiny nick on the corner of my mouth on a spot that I have to watch, but smooth and clean otherwise. Haverford is a wonderful pipe tobacco scent. Great lather whipped up by the Zenith boar and smooth removal from the I1 injector. All around nice.

So, I'll have some extra coffee and then play around with Wilson some in my unexpected extra time. Have a great day!
