  5. Wonderful shave, Andrew! Congrats on the new brush! Jayaruh brushes are fantastic. Then what a marvelous picture of the Hussy. Excellent razor. You're right that you ride the hump of the top spring for a smooth shave. Great stuff all around!

  6. Lesson reaffirmed, a better designed geometry on the head of the razor is more important than technique for a DE razor.

After messing around with skin stretching, extra passes and such not getting satisfactory results though mind you for a beginner this would be excellent results I switched the razor and went back to what works for me voila almost a perfect BBS with no effort.

All the technique in the world or sharper blade wasn't overcoming the head design on that VDH. Technique can help but it is not the be all end all if the blade can't hit the hair at the right angle with enough exposure. Sharper blade won't fix that either just how much work it takes to get the same less than satisfactory result. Skin stretching the same, doesn't matter if more hair is exposed if it can't cut it deep enough, it just makes it easier to cut skin.

  8. That's what I heard. Going to jury trial is putting your decision into the hands of twelve that weren't smart enough to avoid being on a jury. I'm more of the opinion that if you want to be on a jury and you're smart enough, withholding opinions during selection will get you placed.

I haven't been called in many years, but did get to sit on an armed robbery trial. The young man held up a Subway sandwich shop. He was caught on video. After his getaway he tossed the gun. For some reason he got the guilts and turned himself in & confessed. Somewhere between his initial interview and the trial he decided to plea not guilty. When we of the jury had been presented with the evidence (pretty well convicted in my mind), and what served as his defense ( I have no recollection of this) the jury retired to deliberate. Twelve of us sat down, looked at each other, and I did the Alpha Male thing. I said," Should we elect a Jury Foreman?" Majority all pointed at me and it was too late. Doh! Couple of the ladies weren't sure he should go to jail because he did confess, and he looked like he was sorry. Took about an hour to get them to understand that they might be his next victim, so we really ought to impress upon the young criminal how sorry he was. I enjoyed the experience and would keep my lips sealed during selection so I could do it again. Not for any preconceived notions, but to see justice served should that be the case.

That weekend I took the family to the Renaissance Fair. Atlanta has a really good one. The theme was The Three Musketeers. One of my fellow jurymen was a member of the troupe - a Musketeer! He dropped character for just a moment. I knew he looked familiar but I couldn't place him in costume.

  17. It has nothing to do with what I like aka a favorite. Some of my best performing razors are not my favorites. Once you shaved long enough with DE razors and understand how to shave, anyone can shave without understanding how it works, then you understand the only technique needed is to maximize the effectiveness of the razor. I strayed away from that is the problem I was trying to maximize the effectiveness of the technique with no regard for the razor being used. I already know where the max effectiveness for the VDH is since I've used it a few times before with a different blade and have already know how to make those tweaks with this razor.

  18. Neal @NCoxSTL does include a caveat in the Technique Trumps Tools mantra - except for when the tools are damaged. Since a VDH is a recent Chinese clone of the Classic Gillette Flare Tip there's hope it will shave well. No guarantees just as with a bent up or damaged vintage DE. Remember some of what you see here is Sport Shaving. Like the difference between walking down the side walk and parkour.
