Let's put the Zorrik to bed for a bit before bringing it back in a shavette at some point and move on to the Zae blade. Surely Japanese steel, even if not from the "big two", will perform better. Of course, I had to challenge it with the mildest of the mild, the Schick Krona. The Krona comes in at the second smallest blade gap of only .021". For the curious, the smallest gap is on the Merkur Progress on setting 1 which is an amazingly small .015". For the Gillette fans, the Krona is slightly smaller gapped than the Gillette Tech, which comes in at .022". Yeah, they're that close. The head geometry is a bit different so the Krona, to me at least, feels a lot milder than the Tech and requires a more precise angle to do the job. Assuming the Zae blade is Japanese sharp this should be a good pairing. I've never used the Zae before but I'm assuming. Proraso Red and the Stirling badger for lather.
So did I assume correctly with this blade? Yes and no. It's sharp, but not Feather or Kai sharp. Still it's definitely smoother than the Zorrik, though not Feather or Kai smooth. I made three full passes with the razor and did end up with a very nice DFS as a result. I had to work to get enough lather for the third pass as I clearly under-loaded the brush. I need to slow down and remember a badger is not a synthetic. Give it some time to get the soap into the brush.
Not a bad shave overall and certainly better than the past two. Now.....will the Zae last three shaves? That's yet to come.
Don't forget to set your clocks ahead tonight! Of course, in computer and phone lands, that happens automatically. I got the dining room clock and the appliance clocks all reset so it should be good to go in the morning. Have a great Sunday!
