  1. Dunno about Omega synths, haven't tried any. For a while there was an explosion of latest generation synthetics being sold as loose knots and installed in handles. Then Yaqi went from Wholesaler to Retail and they are available for less directly from the Chinese manufacturer. Not sure if Omega makes their synths or outsources.

  2. Omega boar brushes perform wonderfully once broken in. It's another fantastic wet shaving value, in my opinion. I have the 10098 Omega boar knot in a @Jayaruh handle, and it's one of my favorite brushes. A '98 Omega and an Arko shave stick would be a fantastic combo!

  3. Thank you. I got my Wolfman razors when they were first out. Back then Wolfman razors were less expensive than Above The Tie.

  4. Wow, I’ve been incredibly busy for over a week and so far behind I just can’t catch up. Did anything exciting happen in the last 700 or so posts?
    Today was a nice shave.

  5. Matthew, the Omega 98 boar should fit your budget if you can find a local supplier. You can currently purchase them in the US for $10 with free shipping if you use the discount code. This is a deal that rivals Arko shave sticks. :)

  7. Nice shaves, Jason! Sounds like a wonderful weekend. Nothing wrong with a hotel cartridge every now and then. Keeps us honest.

  11. That is a bad situation there Jim, a lot of water can cause major problems when it comes to those large storage tanks. Back in 93 when St. Louis was flooded there was a large area around a propane transfer facility evacuated. It was really odd that one side of my street was evacuated but we were not. There were national guard patrolling and slowing us to come and go only once a day for almost two months. And like any 17 y/o kid would do, I drove through a parking lot to go around them so I could go on with my day as normal. I guess they thought a three inch tall curb would deter the handful of teenagers still in the neighborhood.
  12. Matthew, I've not used a 49, but it should be very similar to the 98. Some guys here have 49's and can comment specifically on them. I think you would be very pleased with it. It would be a lather monster with the Arko.

My two Omega boars had a serious case of funky animal smell when they were new. I build lathers and let the knot sit and dry with the lather in it overnight. The next day, I rinse it out and repeat the process. The animal smell goes away after a week or so, and this will accelerate the break-in process. Arko is the perfect soap to use for defunking the knot.

You're getting a few other good brush suggestions. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the advice you've been given. @BaylorGator is a bit pushy, though, but don't tell him I said so. :)

  14. I have an Omega S-Brush, which is a synthetic. It's okay but there are a lot of other new generation synthetics I like better. Based on my S-Brush, I wouldn't recommend someone get an Omega synthetic instead of an Omega boar. The Omega 49 would probably be a nicer brush, for example.
  15. They make or made more than one variety if synthetic.
Syntex is the oldest. Pure white bristles, I'd guess nylon. What I've read suggests that they are nothing special, but they work. A lot were used as travel brushes I think. S-Brush series are the ones that look like a boar, color-wise. The bristles are a little springy, so they can flick lather around. Other than that, I liked mine. Hi-Brush looks more like the newer synthetics, but most are not the latest, I think. Then there's the black Hi-Brush. They look like all the other black fiber synthetics of late. If so, then they should be awesome. But I have not tried one.

  16. Good thing you already have the ACT!

I’d agree with Charlie on the Omega - great value. A bit stiff for my tastes and take a while to break in, but once they do, they’re a solid choice. I also wouldn’t be scared of a local soap artisans boar brush, particularly if you know their reputation. If they make decent shaving soap I doubt they’d want to ruin the experience selling you a cheap, lousy brush.

I also agree with John. I wouldn’t bother with the Omega synthetic brush. I bought the S brush and PIF’d it away. Not impressed. There is no cheaper decent synthetic than a Yaqi that I am aware of. They are super cheap, awesome, and the industry standard for synths. I ordered one delivered direct from China for less than $10. Not sure why shipping to South Africa would be so expensive. Typically direct ship from China is extremely nominal if you can wait 2-3 weeks to get it. Might be worth a bit of research.

Found the Ogallala in a Duluth Trading Company store yesterday. A great price even.

    Neutrogena Men's Face Scrub
    Proraso PreShave
    Blackland Dart
    Personna Blade (red wrapped)
    Semogue Cherry OC Boar
    Ogallala Bay Rum SS
    Ogallala Bay Rum AS

DFS for the most part. Still learning more about the Dart....riding the cap very methodically with mostly short brushing strokes. The Ogallala BR is a great scent. Wifey approved. Still has a slight staying power into the afternoon, and that's after some medium exercise.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the day!
  18. Great shave, Blair! Excellent choice of hardware and software!
