"Adoration" 295 Hand Forged Giesen & Forsthoff Solingen Germany This one was a mess, when I got it, and has been restored, over the past week. I like to call this one "Corn Cobb"..
Very good day at the Wednesday flea market this morning. One of my regular sellers held these back for me. He knew this was something special. A pair of Wade & Butcher’s in a clean double coffin. One in horn and the other in what appears to be tortoise with inlays. In very good condition for there age
Hey @Timwcic those are horn scales dyed to look like tortoise. You can see a little classic de-lamination of the horn. Neatsfoot oil is your friend here, give ‘em a good soak.
May I inquire about the use of neatsfoot oil on horn scales? Is this a maintenance or a rehab treatment?
Both really, I suspect it replaces oils/moisture that’s been lost over the past 100 years or more, and makes the horn more shiny and lustrous. I suspect it makes it swell a little too which would help the appearance of the delaminated areas. Anyway, folks have used neatsfoot oil on horn scales for a long time.
Does Tortoise not delaminate? Or, is it mainly horn that does this?? BTW, I have used Neatsfoot oil on Horn scales, it helps.
Mineral oil, on the blades. never had a rust issue. On horn, just to maintain, I will rub a little on the scales. For badly dried Horn, I slather the Neatsfoot on them.
I use mineral oil also, I will start using Neatsfoot on my horn scales, I have a lot of those scales. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
