Here are the three types, the two old open comb and the 2011. [IMG]

If the original was like the Merkur 41C then it would have been a mild but decent shave.
I like Fatips but why do Muhle have to go outside to make a proper OC?
    I should've known you'd have them.
Is the 2011 as unforgiving as it's reputation?

Hehe no not my photo. I'm not enough of a fan of the current R41 to seek out the 2011, though I have done some cap swapping .

    Well sourced on the pic.
I was once told that an EJ DE89 cap on a modern R41 gave a similar shave to the 2011.

How do you like the Tatara? I’ve been thinking about getting one, but I heard it has negative exposure so I’m not sure if I would like it or not. I don’t need a crazy amount of blade feel. I just need enough to know where it is.

A new more aggressive Tatara is in the works.

I really like both the Safety Bar and Open Comb plate. Neither is very aggressive and both have a very narrow optimal shaving angle. If I do my part the razor is efficient as any I have tried. I find it shave a lot like a D plate Karve or a standard blade gap Wolfman Wr-1 in terms of efficiency and blade feel. Like @jmudrick indicated they have a more aggressive razor in the works.

Thanks. That’s interesting feedback. I have a standard gap Wolman OC and I like it. I did not like the Karve D plate though, so I traded it for the F. I saw that there is a more aggressive version, but I don’t like the handle. Hopefully they’ll offer it with either handle.

For me the Tatara is a superior design to the Karve despite being a much milder razor, capable of a clean ATG pass on my head where the Karve is a mediocre performer even with the F plate.

I agree that the Tatara is a superior design. Once I mastered the angle, I don't have a DE razor that shaves my neck any better.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I would probably like the Tatara, but I’m not sure if it would provide anything shave wise that I don’t already have. I’m sure I’ll wind up buying one though. I agree with you on the Karve. I like it with the OC plate, but the SB is not very smooth to me, or as efficient.

i've been testing the Fatip piccolo (special edition) vs. R41 head/ weber handle

so far i'm finding them very very close and comfortable in performance, i'm calling it tie for now

depending on what blade, one or the other edges ahead but just barely

my top 3 DE's in no particular order... fatip piccolo, R41, V3A

Along with the iKon Tech and Fatip,, it's the Timeless Bronze and Blackland Dart which rely on exposure rather than gap for efficiency, as does the R41. Razors which rely on gap, like the Karve F, for example, really feel nothing like the R41. Consider also vintage razors like the Barbasol Floating Head, the Swedish Swing and Matador, and the French Le Coqs, all of which feature prominent exposure.
