And so there I am puttering around town and stop in at one of my regular antique stores. He's always got a half dozen SR, SE, DE, and injectors on display. None I'm really interested in and at least one I think I traded to him. Getting ready to go after looking in all the dusty corners. The proprietor says,"Hey, just got these in. Want to take a look?" Why, yes. Yes I do. A bread box sized cardboard container with three or five razor cases, some shiny things under them. I inspected each piece, setting the Valet & SE razors to one side. Two Flare Tips that I've no interest in. One Schick type G with the textured metal on top, already have it. At the bottom three older DE.
    Single Ring 3.gif
The handles looked like the Maggard MR18 SS handle I recently picked up from The Traveling Box. Being just ignorant enough to not quite know what I was doing, I grabbed the cap & base and gave it a twist. No movement. Then a thought struck me. Three piece, but not like later Gillettes.
Single Ring 2.gif Huh, glad the shop owner was busy with his IT guy discussing vinyl banners and business cards. He didn't see me almost twist his old razor in half trying to open it the wrong way. So I looked at all three. Serial numbers on top of the base plates? Not where I expected to find them but... Hey! I'm ignorant, not stupid. Obtaining permission to take photos, got clear reads on two of three.
Single Ring 1.gif Seems the one in the best condition is a model 100/102 from 1906, the next best identified as model 102 from 1921. The third partial serial number puts it from 1920.

I mentioned these were a little older than I was familiar with, and would get back with him. Anyone have experience using a Single Ring?
    (I'm looking at you Joseph @Primotenore & Jason @jtspartan ;))

I looked at those today. Didn't know they were worth using. Not you Chris @Bama Samurai, you're Hard Core and can use any blade holder. Thanks for the review Andrew! Danny - my daughter is an Inventory Manager at Dollar Tree. If you want a case of those, let me know. No point is mailing just one since the postage is more than the razor's price tag. I'd offer them to Andrew but I don't know what he'd do with more razors. (PM me if anyone has an interest.)

Fantastic razors, Rick! I love the SR. In fact, please let me know if you are not going to get them, I may just have make a trip across the river to pick them. I guess let me know if you don't want all of them. ;)

    Just the Basics June!!

    June 20

    Razor - Gillette Tech
    Blade derby-extra.jpg (1)
    Soap - Tabac
Brush - Wolf Whiskers Custom Silvertip
    Post - Alum

Since I skipped Tabac Tuesday I'll just call it Tabac Thursday. Time to get basic. How about a Tech with a Derby blade.....basic enough? I know what you're thinking....where in the world did the Czar find a Derby blade?! I surprise myself at what I find lurking in my stash at times. I remember Derby being the blade everyone loved to trash talk about when I started down this path. Funny how time, experience and TECHNIQUE change things.

The mild Tech and the not-so-sharp Derby - add three passes with the Tabac lather from the Silvertip badger and you get -------a very nice near-BBS finish. You also get quiet alum and a nice after shave feel. That's what basic shaving is all about.

35 hours to breakfast for those of you coming to town!! Let's get it ON!!!

Actually, Rick, tomorrow will be my first shave with one. I’ve had a Canadian ball end Old Type for a few years, but just got the SR in this week. Others will know more than me for sure.
Here are my two Old Types:
    C8A39898-0DE1-4CC3-A9F2-D1C906AC9CB1.jpeg
Heads are nearly identical. I love my ball end, and will assume the SR will be very similar based on the similar head geometry.
You already know about the serial numbers. Here’s what is odd- neither of mine has a serial number. However, both are thin caps, which I believe means early 20s at the latest.
Here is the baseplate of the SR:
    0A7F057D-C5E3-4856-BE9E-3B52B4A2278F.jpeg
The width of the logo puts it at 1920. I think.

For yours, I’d grab the one in the best shape! Especially given the early year of it.
Or more if they are priced well! You can move them on here.
I paid $10 for mine, fwiw. It does have gouges on the cap, though.

I see talk of the CJB Pain Stick and wonder... Are these the type of blades it takes?

I might have a dabble at the price the razors and blades ship for (from the East)!

Well, Rick, I have a bit of experience with the SR. When I first acquired one, I was surprised at the blade feel; much more present than later Gillette razors. The blade alignment probably will need to be adjusted, before tightening down. They are also more diminutive than I would have expected, but that also makes them easy to maneuver. I enjoy the shaves I get with them. Nothing I can't get from any other razor, but there's something about using a 100+ year old razor that is pretty cool. Good find. BTW, I am sure Fuzzy will concur.

    Good morning all.
    Nice shave today.
Got myself under the lower lip, small but there it is. People were walking in and out of the bathroom and I didn't stop my work, I know better. Otherwise a nice smooth shave. Stirling Bay Rum didn't let me down, feeling clean and smooth.
20190621_062856.jpg Been a while since I used a "shovel head", but got a good 2 pass head and face shave. First shave with this razor since I received it a few days ago, only one blade needed for the work today.
Lots of great pictures and work going on in the den as I try to wander through the pages when I get a few minutes here and there. Nice!
Firts time in what seems like weeks it's not gonna rain for a whole day, hope Saturday is the same.

    To all
    Enjoy
