First, I want to say thanks to Danny for sending me this soap. It was totally unexpected and greatly appreciated. Now, it's on with my shave report! Fine is a real hard soap so I used my Stirling boar brush to lather my face. I didn't bloom the soap. I used the paste/ painting and slowly add increments of water method to get a decent lather. I smelled the puck and their was a slight pleasant orangey scent that wasn't overbearing. My disappointment was the scent wasn't present while lathering my face. The lather was decent, but it took me a minute or 2 longer to get it just right. I guess Stirling spoiled me. However, I attribute all this to the fact that I have not use this soap before and have to get the water/soap ratio dialed in for this soap. Also, my sniffer is sometimes blocked so I don't get the full scent exposure. The most important thing about the Fine soap is that it was slick and gave some cushion. Now, I need to improve on using this soap like I did with Razorock to straight razor shave with it. Presently, if Stirling is an A, then Fine would be a solid B. I believe that the more I get acquanted with this soap the higher the grade just like my Razorock soap experience. I did 3 full passes and got an excellent BBS shave. Now, I know why I like straight shaving. It's because the time between shaves is much longer than when I use a safety. Applied the orange scented Satsuma followed by the Nivea balm. 3 Pass DFS today. Much the usual from this setup...used a few days in a row now.....only changed the razor and brush. I believe I'm now understanding and experiencing the term 'lather hog'....this knot seems to keep its lather contained, both in the shaving bowl, but also unless there is serious face lathering. It doesn't like face 'paint' strokes (which I prefer) as most of my boar brushes. I work my face prep in the shower immediately before the shave with a very vigorous face soap/scrub, so a face lather to get the growth 'prepped' isn't my routine. Immediately out of the shower to the sink to apply the pre-shave, and it sits while I concoct the lather for the day. Anyhoo....fantastic slick yogurty bliss was made, and the HT 8000 being super sharp, but just a little edgy, not really smooth. Still working on that with various methods of hone 'finishing'. No nicks or much to report.

Where's the SE's you may ask. Well Jim @jluc threw a wrench in my SEptember plans by sending me his Timeless Bronze, with both the safety bar and open comb baseplates, to try out. I decided to start work the mild safety bar base plate. Wow is this thing smooth! This razor has hardly any blade feel and no real sense that the blade is cutting the whiskers but sure enough, after the shaving stroke they are gone. It's not the most efficient razor, it took a little bit of extra touch-up in a few places to get me mostly BBS but the shave was super comfortable! After one shave in really thinking about keeping my eyes open for one of these. Spotted the Gillette Winner blades on eBay a few weeks ago and for $8/100 decided to give them a go. They are a very smooth blade but not quite as sharp as say the 7 O'Clock Permasharp Stainless or any of the Russian Gillettes. They are probably in the same league as the Gillette Wilkinson Sword blades. Last but not least, iced Pineapple! Could there be a better way to to start if a month of Stirling?

I'm going through a similar experiment now. Glen just did his hone services in addition to replacing the scales on my Henkels. The Henkels is by far the smoothest shaver of ANY straight razor I've shaved with to date. It's made me ponder metallurgy (materials) vs. sharpness vs. smoothness, and then how to combine those for smooth shaving edges for the straight razors I own.

I've honed 6 of my 8 straight razors, and all 6 of my kamisori razors (3 western grind and 3 traditional grind) from bevel set to 'shave ready'. I can create hair popping shaveable edges from toe to heel. A couple of my kamisoris and Japanese straights get scary sharp after linen/leather stropping (some of them even before the 12k hone). Same for a couple of my straight razors. But....some (straight or kami) don't always shave smooth though. In my mind...this is a combination of pressure (hone and/or strop technique) and blade materials (metallurgy) of my razor collection.

My 'shave ready' is a test that Glen shows in some of his videos, and it works very well guiding me to judge my honing and process. It's the tree topping arm hair test coming off a 12k hone (no stropping involved at that point). Some say, even Glen I believe, you can get results on that test on much coarser stones. I've been quietly lurking and researching A LOT of threads on 'finishing'. I haven't officially put anything on paper on my process vs. which straight or kami I've honed, it's kind of just in my head and flying blind, getting razors to shaveable sharp, but it is repeatable and works so far. Time is slowly becoming more available for me to work on a method or process to get to 'smooth' for each of my razors. Could be a long journey.....

Haven't jumped completely into rabbit hole of the 1% of final finishing. That can get pricey. However, I recently stepped up to the edge, peered over, chose to add balsa pasted stropping to my process.....results coming in the next few weeks.

Some of my razors take sharper edges and others hold there edges longer, so metallurgy plays a part. Straight razors are great for people with OCD.

Starting experimenting with one if the junk razors I got on the cheap. This is a 1953 (y4) Super Speed. This is one of the dirtiest, nastiest razors I have ever messed with or seen. This thing was coated with a tar like substance that had to soak for about an hour in mineral spirits. Washed and dried and then bead blasted. This razor was rough and even shows in the final results. I was afraid to blast it anymore because of the pitting. The red spots you see on the razor I believe is copper. I did not disassemble the razor but finally worked the grit out. The best way to do this would be to take the razor apart. So what did I learn from this? Razor number 2 out of the junk lot. I am really pleased with this one. Straightened one tooth and bead blasted it. Hardest part it getting the grit out. Cleaned her up and added a little grease. She is smooth. May have to shave with this one soon!

What a great gift on the soap, Joe. I love Fine soaps, but they did take a bit for me to get them really dialed in. Load like heck, use lots of water added very incrementally, and forget a bowl with them, imho.

As to angles,
Most DE blade have a Double bevel Tim Zowada at one time had some great Micro Graphs of them on his website, one of the Feather blade had a Tripel bevel
This is done to create a stronger more concave edge, much like how we work a SR edge on the hones and strops.
The final angles are in the 20° range on the DE blades, I am pretty sure I am remembering that correctly

Smoothness

On a SR we use our strops to tweak in the edge for the most comfort possible from the straightest edge on what is commonly called the "Fin" or very apex of the edge.
On a DE they machine grind the edge and then apply Coatings to smooth it out after the grinding, what I remember reading was that Feather used the highest grinding wheel at 3000 grit I would be hard-pressed to find that again but you might be able to sniff out more info now ..
