1. Tonight's shave was with a wonderful, Japanese Razor. I had a great 2 pass shave, that wiped away 3 days of growth, to leave a BBS face.

Razor- T.F.Hairop Barbers First Quality. Japanese Silver Steel..
    Brush- JR#262, WD SilverTip Badger.
    Soap- ARKO/Sandalwood scented
Aftershave- Vintage Avon Spice. Country Vendor, decanter.

  2. So, @Steve56 , I know little about Japanese Razors, other than I have a few. They are well crafted. What do you know about Tanifuji made razors?? I honed this one, a long while back, after I acquired it, from Japan.
  3. Scott,

Tanifuji-San was born in the late 1800s, and when he saw a Solingen razor in the early 20th century, he wanted to make Japanese razors of the same or better quality. He had a long career and made some very fine razors both for his company and for others like Nichiri Barber Supply. He mentored Iwasaki-San and actually scaled and finished the Western Iwasaki razors when Iwasaki-San realized that he’d have to have another building for that!

Before Tanifuji-San finished Western razors for the Iwasaki company, a man named Yukio Kamijo did the finishing for the Iwasaki Western razors. I personally think that Tanifuji did a better job, but the Kamijo razors are more collectible, especially in good condition.

The Cape Swedish Steel razors are always a good buy, Tanifuji-made but without the price raising name recognition. Most Japanese razors were a fairly heavy grind, but the Cape 1000 and 2000 were more hollow. Some of my other favorites are the Favorit, Silver Steel, and BaBa models. He also likely had ties to other brands/manufacturers which are not well documented or known, and I’ve always thought that my Shell Silver Steel stamped Perfectworks is a Tanifuji-made razor.

Like you said, there almost isn’t any such thing as a bad Japanese razor, it would have been an embarrassment for a journeyman Japanese razor maker to release a warped, uncentered edge, or poorly ground (one with an uneven bevel) razor. You can’t really say that about other countries of origin, maybe pre-war Swedish razors or French razors at their peak. All countries produced great razors, but the Japanese just almost never released a dud into the market, they were all good, and Tanifuji was one of the best.
  4. Got a feeling Mike will be posting a SOTD of that Morley he restored in the restoration thread, so... had to bust out a Clover myself. :)

Cool little 5/8 or 11/16 or something close, W.H. Morley & Sons. A little barber’s notch, a little thumb notch, get rid of the shoulder, grind out a full hollow, and you get a fun little razor.

I didn't shave on Monday being out of town. This gave the M. Jung 48 hours of growth the handle and it performed very well.

  13. Another Japanese Razor Day. I had a very smooth 2 pass shave, that left me with a DFS(Was in a Hurry). One small bleeder, that I didn't know was there. This razor took the top off of a small pimple. It is no more. Great shaving razor.
