  4. In the same price range, I looked at an Escape. It's an '03 with 133K miles in the same price range, needs the $200 windshield replaced. Don't recall the engine size, but it's front wheel drive like the other two. Comparing nearly all apples to apples I scratched the old Ford off my list. Did I mention I'm replacing an '86 Ranger? The prior ride was a '72 Mach 1. I like Fords.
Thanks for that Joe! I was contemplating on the Mazda offering "Give me a new battery, and knock $300 off the price, and a nekkid picture of Bea Arthur" One of those was a negotiable item. Is there a specific reason for the value of $600?

  7. It's a negotiation tool. Most car dealers are looking for suckers. They count on people who don't do there homework. Dealers always price there cars at least 1000 over the book value. So I offer 1200 below what they are asking. If they balk, say this is a cash deal and I want to take delivery ASAP or I walk. Prepare to walk and then let them get you back to the table to give you a counter. Whatever the counter, go a hundred below and say that's it. They will take it. Now, how they get you is with the Finance and Warranty Mgr who will try to sell yoh xtras like security system, etc. If you have the resolve to do this, then you can get a good deal. Remember, don't go in nasty, but go in well prepared and if you have to show them why you are offering an amount based on your homework, so much the better. Remember, they work on commission and they want someone to pay close to the full asking price. Their markup on used cars are anywherw between 1500 dollars and up depending on the car. Hope this helps.

Remember, don't go in nasty, but make sure you are armed as to why you came up with your offer. Even show them the research because it removes some of their strength in negotiation. These salespeople are working on commission so they are going to want you to pay close to asking price. Finally, if the deal isn't made, then say thanks. Leave on good terms and tell them to give you a call in 3 days if they change their minds. Sometimes they will call. Don't fall for the line that people are looking to buy this car and it will be gone by the end of the weekend. This is a tactic to try to pressure you to make a quick decision. I hope this clues you into how you should buy a car from a dealer. Wish you well!

  18. I made a quick decision to buy a used car many years ago. Why. I really liked the way it looked and could see taking it, then someone walked in and asked to see any of the exact cars I was looking at. I said "He ain;t gonna take THIS ONE.....the baby is mine!"

  20. Your situation is much different than Rick's. You were buying a "hot looking" car and you bought it out of emotion, while Rick is buying a more practical vehicle.
