I am almost at the end of my last tub of Queen Charlotte shaving cream. This is a favorite because it performs great in a hot scuttle, not warm but hot. I need to find the next best so this month when I have enough time in the morning I will test some of my soaps in a hot scuttle and see if they can stand the heat. I learned from doing this that when the scuttle is very hot, I use a tea kettle to heat the water, the lather looks watery and bubbly but when applied to my face is thickens into the proper consistency. I also want to compare some of my artisan straights and see how well their edges perform in both sharpness and durability. I recently acquired a Drew Dick and Snail Forge razor, my Mike Martinez, Koraat and Hart Steel will join in the comparison.

Today I put Fine shaving soap to the hot scuttle test because while the scent is long gone the performance is outstanding and it is tallow based. The performance in the hot scuttle was impressive, very similar to Queen Charlotte Soaps. I was runny and bubbly in the beginning but as soon as I brushed it on my face the lather returned to normal and it's usual slickness was there. Today the Drew Dick was on it's third shave on her 'factory' edge, smooth and very sharp. I missed an epic by just a little tickle from the alum.

After the gym I had some spicy tofu stew for lunch. It comes with rice served in a stone bowl that heated up to a couple thousand of degrees. You leave the lid on for a while then scoop out some rice and then poor water into the bowl. If wait long enough the rice in contact with the stone gets crispy.

This morning I reached for a rare French razor, the Spadson, and decided to mount the head on a RazoRock Bulldog handle. My shaves with the razor in the past have been satisfactory, but I always found the original handle to be too small, and oddly awkward in use. I really like the size, heft and knurling on the RR. As I began my shave, I realized that I really liked the balance this new combination provided. The Spadson is a highly efficient tool with a lot of blade feel. It seems comparable to a Gibbs at setting 6 or my Ambassador at about 8. I kept things relatively technical at first, riding the cap for that first pass and avoiding long sweeping strokes. I was amazed at the closeness of the shave on that first pass. There remained only a few spots along my jawline and under my chin that needed cleaning up. The Alum block revealed a bit of warmth on my right cheek where I started the shave, but otherwise, a fine BBS. I kept the dome shave to one pass, mostly out of respect for the cutting power of this razor. I maintained the same approach used on my face, but was tentative about the back of my head, and ended up with nick requiring the styptic. This was not the razor’s fault, but rather attributable to the arthritis in my hands and shoulders. The result was still a DFS on the noggin. The MWF provided a great protective, slick surface throughout the shave. I realized afterwards that I spent about the same amount of time with my one and a half pass shave as I normally spend with my regular three pass. The Spadson is easily the most aggressive/efficient non-adjustable razor I own, definitely not a daily driver, but will go into the rotation. I feel clean, smooooth, and refreshed!

Currently the super max blue diamond ive been using for two months has peaked, its still buttery smooth after 32 2 pass shaves with touch ups (yes you read that correctly, 32!)

This is definitely a match for the gillette 7 o clock sharp edges in terms of longevity and sharpness and will most likely become my go to gillette replacement.

The arko has been my standard soap for many months now, but i shaved with arko for the entire December.

Without further ado, heres my first SOTD post of 2020.

Keith, I will follow your focus with great interest. At 3:15 in this video, your hometown barber appears to build his lather on the side of a stove. That's a first for me. I bet the piping hot lather feels really good, and it would certainly prep your beard well. Hopefully you will be able to find a replacement for the Queen Charlotte soap that can withstand the heat.

Using a new Feather blade in my funny looking razor, 3rd shave, more info to fill the void. Although I didn't report this so far, I've come to realize this is a mild type tool. That means I "over shaved" my neck, thus I had a common issue when that is done. This morning's shave was more the Super Speed way, now that's better. No issues, blade running as designed. I haven't yet tamed my Neo-Ras, but I've come a long way to understanding it. I also noticed that I need to keep a better grip on the handle. Seems that the head wants to glide sideways when it travles. I haven't yet got a cut from this movement, but don't want to chance it either. Riding the cap is possible, you just have to listen to the shave, not look at the head. Figure I'm not going to get a super close, super smooth shave with this baby, but I am clean, smooth, ready for the day.

Although it's a mild type blade holder, when I finally get the hang of it, it will shave fine. Probably better than most, but the jury is still out.
Oh and the Stirling Lemon Chill.
A firm, YES!
The pre-shave was a bath bar of it in the shower (not shown), that's nice!

Nice shave, Terry! Lemon Chill is a terrific scent. Just follow the advice of @Drygulch and don't go nuts with the bath soap!

Great shave, Jeff! I like the Viking brush and the razor looks nice! Getting a DFS on the dome with one pass tells me that your razor is aggressive. Have a great day!

Omission is covered in Troublemaking 301. That's what happens, Keith, when you skip the on-line classes. When will you guys learn? You saw how @RyX improved his photos when I sent him to The Sam Sung Online School of Photography.

I don't like to brag, but I skipped the on-line classes and attended a special school. You had to be sent there by a judge. I now have a major in Mischief and a minor in Naughtiness. I earn 1.0 CEU's for every month of participation in the 30DC.

I'll give Texas credit for best chili. But BBQ? Nope. True BBQ has to marinate with blues music in the background. Another reason STL beats KC as well.
