As much as I enjoy the BBQ in the Lou I think the cultural shock would be too much for me to handle

Yikes, I think you need to reset the bevel on that blade.

 

First skin stretching is a given. I find it THE greatest aid to getting a close and comfortable shave.

For the beginning strokes (cheeks going south) I touch the razor flat or almost on my skin similar to the angle used to hone.

As I begin a downward stroke I slightly twist or rotate the tool in my fingers enough to get cutting sensation. Mostly edge feel and what can be felt of cut resistance on some tools and audio where applicable. I try to rely more on arm movement than wrist action.

This works for the traditional grip and the normal south to north reverse grip. Less so for traditional grip, center to side type strokes I use at the rounding of the jaw that use more wrist action. (this is where I usually get binked)

I don't shave my mustache, so I cannot respond for that area.

Guaging by a protracted angle or spine width never really worked for me. I always try to use the minimum angle and minimum cutting energy, preferring to relather and make add passes if necessary.

One of the most fruitful moves in hair removal is the quick follow-up stroke(s). I try to minimize these since even the best soap lube is gone at 3 and it is where most irritation begins.

My pattern is (emphasis my) using alternating hands:
Pass 1
Cheeks downward to jaw
Lower neck to jaw
Pass 2
Cheeks center to side
Lower neck to jaw again
Pass 3
Jaw to lower neck
Jaw upwards on cheeks
Pass 4
Neck final, mostly downward, sometimes up.

I'll wet my fingers to check progress and add water between lathers. Doing so requires careful rinsing and drying for 2 handed shaving.

I'm not yet proficient enough to make cross-grain passes on the neck, however I'm improving with my current pattern and get really close.

'Back in the day' and pre-computer my brother-in-law was a machinist.

I had him turn me a couple of parts for a high performance outboard I had.

I had no idea what he meant when he asked if he could use a free machining stainless, but later learned the difficulty in some of what he did.

I try to always watch the blade when I load injectors to make sure in not dragging anywhere.

Wow. That's some serious weepers, Patrick. That calls for a no-shave day. Heal well soon.

 

It slid out of the key effortlessly like I've done so many times before. I always inject slowly and carefully as to not catch on the way through until it reaches the far blade stop and seats in place .I think I just got a dud this time. Next time I will bounce some light off it to be sure the edge is good .

 

Thats a good idea Joseph. Still sensitive to the touch and can see about 3 places it scraped . I'll use balm today then i'm starting a 30 day rule Monday with the Superspeed I began wetshaving with. Thanks .

A welcome Sunday morning, hope things are going great in your part of the world.
A Razorock Blackhawk V2 with a new Feather blade for todays job. Lathering Razorock Orange Sunrise with Lucky Tiger finish, they go quite nice together here.

The synthetic brush works well with this soap, goooood.
2 passes head and face, some touch up for the sake of it, no issues.

Talking to my father in law yesterday he stated how if he didn't have to, he'd never shave. Says it always scrapes his skin, I know that feeling, well.
Now you'd think THAT would be the perfect opportunity to get him started on the road to shave plesantry. Oh no, I know him to well, the man is stubborn as it gets.
I'm not sure that anyone will be able to get him to even lay still, after he passes. My wife was glad I didn't go there, I just said "yep".
Me, I'm glad I found the way when it comes to the morning chore.
Shaving to me is a skill, like any skill it takes some coaching, good advice, and practice, practice, practice.
Compared to say a race, I dont think I'll win every time, but always come in the top 5. That's good for me!

Being clean shaven is a job requirement for myself and my coworkers so the subject comes up more often than probably most other work environments. I've shared a little of what I've learned with them when the subject arises. I've converted a couple but most would rather continue with what they're doing and continue complaining about it.
