I heard from him yesterday via facebook. I don't know any details other than he's not feeling well. He's hoping to return to TSD soon. That was literally the whole conversation I had with him.

Shavette Shave #20--”I’ll Have a Fifth... of Shavette!

Gear

• Razor: The Max Headroom Focus R21 shavette
• Blade: Personna Blue (1)
• Brush: Semogue Boar
• Soap: B&M Reserve “Cool”--I love the way this soap smells! It doesn’t seem to perform quite as well for me as Stirling of Soap Commander, and for longer shaves, the soap dissipates before I finish, but I keep using this sample because I just love how it smells. The next opening in my AS rotation will probably be seeing RR’s Blue Barber, which is supposed to be fairly close to this soap.
• Menthol: Stirling Frost Drops--I went double today just to keep things chilly
• AS: Aqua Velva Ice Blue
• Balm: Stirling Glacial Unscented

The Shave...
2 passes today, WTG and ATG with some light touch ups. And with a light set down error as well. It bled enough that I thought I’d need the styptic, but with time and a cold water rinse, I guess I must have just bled out.

Results were pretty pleasing: DFS/CCS and no irritation. I could have pressed the issue with a 3rd pass, and possibly bumped the shave to BBS/DFS, but I highly doubt I’d have done it without irritation. Besides, While I had plenty of it, the B&M Cool was starting to look kind of sketchy there by the end--very foamy with none of that slick shine that I tend to get early in the shave. Nope, best to just call it…



I am a fifth of the way complete on the shavette journey! We are about halfway through our Sunday--make it count, folks

fine shave and pic Tim..good show.i am convinced shavettes are more about being manly than closer shaves..especially using a 1/2 de blade..but straight/ shavette shaving is about the procedure as well.the zen part of it.just my opinion of course...keep up the good work..

Everyone is different, Gary. I'm far from a manly man, but I enjoy learning skills that many people would consider to be off the wall. For example, I can send Morse Code using a set of paddles and an electronic keyer, and I can copy it by ear. That's about as geeky as it gets. I also started the DE shaving thing with Feather blades after reading about people saying that was a bad idea because the blades were too sharp. To me, it was a challenge, and I thought it might help me eventually get better shaves. I also thought possibly that Japanese blades would be manufactured to higher standards...don't know if that's true, and I like Russian steel now, but that's what I thought.

Regarding shavettes...I can get super close with mine, especially on the least challenging areas like my cheeks. Other areas, not as much...yet. If I stick with it, I can see a day where I'll routinely get excellent open blade shaves every time. I am seeing progress, mostly baby steps at this point. For me, using a shavette is more about improving my overall technique which translates into better shaves with any kind of razor. I have a sense of accomplishment anytime I complete a DFS or better shave using a shavette with no boo boos or irritation. I smile every time I hear that shavettes are more difficult than straights. To be honest, that may be why I stick with them.

I can see where straight shavers have zen moments using those tools and keeping the edges shave ready. In addition, they are flat out beautiful tools. For a straight to satisfy me, however, it would have to be "Feather" sharp. I know they can be honed this way. For some reason, learning how to do that doesn't interest me. And all my leather belts are used to keep my pants from falling down. I do enjoy seeing other shavers have fun and be challenged using them. I just think everyone is different, and that's cool.

i agree Charlie..absolutely..just saying a de blade in a forward exposure de/se or shavette will deliver a full on bbs ..think of a fatboy on 9/,2011 r41/tech with the safety bar cut off..a properly supported de blade with the proper technique will deliver the same shave.how it's done and for what reasons/choices/goals /gains is personal choice..

Lay off the pork rinds, Evan, and you should see an improvement in 24 to 48 hours.

I also think it would be a fun challenge to shoot for consistent near-BBS shaves with my Travel Tech. I'm convinced this little guy will deliver the goods with some practice. Maybe a future focus??

Home church with my family has been surprisingly smooth, thus far (which is kind of a miracle in and of itself )

very cool.admitted,some de razors/blade holders can be too mild/narrow/neutral blade exposure for thick,heavy beard types..i find using post war techs too mild at present.maybe more practice needed for me..
