2020 Shavette Focus Shave # 21

Two days of growth, two-plus passes, and a DFS+ overall result. No blood or irritation, and the alum was quiet. I'll take it.

For obvious reasons, none of us will ever forget March 2020. March Madness, in many ways, has proved to be a welcome distraction from reality. This is one of the few places I visit where the generosity, acceptance, encouragement, and help flows so freely. I'll always value the friendships I've made here. A few wingnuts and troublemakers persist, and you know who you are.

I've completed 21 shaves using a Parker SRX shavette (a fantastic tool) since February 22. The shaves have generally been DFS or better, and my confidence continues to increase. I'm working on some new maneuvers and grips, and I continue to make baby-step improvements. I really appreciate my friends here offering suggestions and tips that help me learn. I've enjoyed watching my 30 DC brothers have fun, improve their techniques, and show off their new gear. Great job, everyone.

Well, believe it or not, the end of March has arrived. What a month. Great month on here and I want to thank everyone again for your constant support and participation in spite of a really unique and unprecedented month in the real world. Looks like April is going to continue in that vein, so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone around again to maintain some normalcy in the world. Well, normal for us anyway. I know for most other people we aren't exactly the model of "normal". But that's ok. We don't want to be.

Final day of the month I just kept the Fatboy and Sharpstar out as it's a nice lead in to April anyway. El Caballero with the JR46 for great lather and three passes for the baby to show up. Fine, fine shave and a great way to end the month. See you all in April!!

The Shave...

Another 2 pass shave for the books today. 1st pass (WTG) was all quiet on the facial front (neck too, I guess).

Pass 2 was mostly XTG this time round and turned out decent enough; I ain’t going anywhere. The set down from two days ago caught up with me again, but disappeared before the pass was finished.

The results were definitely closer to CCS than DFS; however, no irritation at all, and that is what I’m after on the weekdays--look good, feel great!

Some remarkable things happened this month. First and foremost, one month of shavette shaves without any serious mishaps or disfigurement. I attribute much of this to the design of the Focus R21 shavette. I’ll test this out in May when I do a few shaves with the Utopia Care shavette (designed, I’m fairly certain, to slice its users). Second, on the last day of the focus, I managed to bottom out my stick of Soap Commander “Drive”....

Happy Monday I think. The big C-MON brush did a wonderful job whipping up The Dead Sea into a nice rich lather. A much better shave today. Three passes and touch ups caught the baby with ease. Very pleased wit round 2 of Stoylin Spice. Best shave I've had in quite a while. The reason? No cuts or weepers. Awwwright. . Another reason? Before I began the shave, could see it was most needed. I guess I had been thinking 'I spent some time getting them all off yesterday, now they just come back like yesterday's shave was never done!' Anyway, I stuck to two passes, even though I am willing myself to go to 3. Two really finishes things. But on the subject of "3", some soaps deserve 3 back-to-back shaving days-Stoylin Spice is one of them. No issues here, all went perfect. Super Duper Excellent.

I didn't shave this weekend, which is quite rare for me, so this morning's shave was dealing with a full 72 hour growth. Got a nice lather, but it took me a little longer than it usually does with Stirling. The brush is definitely still breaking in as well. 3rd day with the OT and I must say it did a great job with the 3 day growth. Anyone hoping for a 'I can't even tell there is a blade in there' experience probably wouldn't enjoy it, but I have loved the past 3 shaves with it. After 3 passes, I am almost completely smooth and that may be judging it too harshly. Finished with the Maol splash, which is a quality product that I haven't seemed to reach for enough recently. Overall, another fantastic shave.

Couldn't get my picture the way I wanted, so I cheated and made it in B&W.
Yesterday, there was a BST for MdC Rose. I saw it very early in the morning and could have had it.
Then, I came to my senses. I have 1kg of Klar Kabinett and a mostly-full tub of Eufros Rosa Bourbon.
I am set with rose for the foreseeable future.
With a clear mind, I set forth on this shave.
The boar was soaked thoroughly and I did put a few drops of H2O on the puck.
For those unfamiliar with KK, it is EXTREMELY hard soap.
I built the lather on the puck and went to the face.
Terribly under-hydrated at first, I proceeded to add more and more water to the
brush, until I had a very shiny and dense lather.
Scents are subjective, I know, but the pure rose scent of the KK is probably my favorite.
Manuel's Rosa Bourbon is very similar and, I believe, still available.
The Sharp Star inserted in my '47 SS really was wonderful.
Angle is easy to find and maintain. The blade is sharp and smooth.
I got a tad bit adventurous and went for the ATG just below my chin and
was rewarded with a small patch of irritation.
Shrugged it off and did an ice-cold rinse.
Surprisingly good post-shave feel.
Completed the shave with the simple, yet effective, DRH Pink.

Superb thick creamy lather with the AoS SC and the Ever Ready synthetic, really liking this flat top brush. 2 pass shave with neck touch ups. DFS+ result with no weepers, the DX kamisori handle mostly on auto pilot lately (but NOT....don't want any mistakes with this unassuming bad boy). Quick light application of PAA's ASB, and a nice dose of AoS Oud Suede.

Following along on the thread, but time constrained for individual responses sometimes. Thanks for all the comments on my shaves, and love all the gear/images posts going on.

Still working (a little), but mainly tearing through small honey do projects as well as the bathroom project. The bathroom repair/restoration is about a third done, today is changing shower plumbing fixtures, and time willing, installing glass shower doors.

The Shave...
Went with the standard 2 pass shave. 1st pass (WTG) went was (to rob from the Talking Heads) same-as-it-ever-was, but did get me slightly in the spot where I set down incorrectly yesterday--should have been looking for that.

Pass 2 (ATG/XTG) went fairly well, and I wisely took my time over yesterday’s set down error, and experienced no further drama.

The results were somewhere between DFS and CCS. I decided to call it good and walk away mostly irritation free except for a small area on my neck where I tried (largely without success) to shave sideways, against the grain. I’ll save that move for another day...

It's MENTHOL MONDAY!! Stirling Iced Coffee for the soap and the 30DC LE brush from @jtspartan for the lather. The Tuxedo knot is excellent and has no difficulty at all producing an exceptional lather. Decided to change things up a bit and was inspired by Chris @Bama Samurai from a couple days ago when he pulled out his Fatboy. Threw a Sharp Star in that badboy and dialed it up to 9. Three passes and the baby is in the house with no blood, irritation or any other issue. The Fatboy (or 195 as it was originally called) is an absolutely top notch Gillette. While some of the prices on these border on insanity, the results and build of the razor are definitely top tier. Excellent shave as we approach April which, of course, will feature Adjustables as a part of the theme. More on that when it launches!! Look for it most likely tomorrow. Happy Tuesday everyone. The big C-MON brush loaded and lathered the SV Cubebe with ease. Three passes and touch ups ended in a drama free BBS shave. I am off to my office today to tie up a few loose ends. I think we will work remotely for the next couple of weeks. I sill still need to go to one client office twice a week. Luckily they are running a skeleton crew so social distancing is not an issue. I hope everyone has a great Tuesday. Take care and be safe.

March 2020 Recap

I have used several different razors this month without a goal or plan. I did pull the Karve out and rediscover just how much I like using the razor. As usual the best part of the month was following the posts and adventures here on the 30DC. It has been nice to follow along as several are beginning to master using a shavette. The friendship and fellowship exhibited daily on this thread is its best legacy. I look forward to participating next month.

Well..another great shave this morning with the same stuff as yesterday(most of the same, I should say....the brush was the Jayaruh#59). 2 healthy passes, no cuts. This time, I missed some on the LEFT side, but knew it right away, so I had the presence of mind to go right at it. The only other glitch was administering a little too much of the Spice A.S. on, thus the sting occurred immediately. But I know now it doesn't last that long 15 seconds for brush-moistening. 25 to move it around the soap. . Felt great at the finish. The two glitches lowered the rating to Most Excellent.

Another month "in the can" and what a month it has been.
We saw the return of some valuable members.
We followed the adventures of new shavette shavers.
We tried new gear; broke out old gear and, despite a turbulent world,
we managed to be supportive; positive and grateful.
So, how can I love a soap so much (CF Midnight Stag)?
And be fairly ambivalent about another soap (CF Ghost Town Barber)?
Unscrewing the soap lid for the first time yesterday, I have an immediate flashback to
another "barbershop" soap, namely Mike's Natural.
The scent is almost an exact copy...off of the puck.
Let me back up.
I have been completely enamored by Midnight Stag. The soap is terrific;
the slickness and protection are just fine (old base, I should mention)
and the scent...um Himmels Willen! The scent is glorious.
Fast forward 24 hours.
The Ghost Town Barber (hereafter GTB) arrives yesterday with the aftershave and bath soap.
I already mentioned that the scent off the puck bears a striking similarity to Mike's.
Today, I lather up and go right to the face.
The new base is definitely rich, creamy, dense and slick.
I started with a very wet brush (per instructions on the tub) and sure enough
that was almost enough water. I did add some additional and the results were quite pleasing.
The scent opens up upon lathering and does take off on a slightly different tangent than the Mike's.
I get some stronger orange, even a "hint" of benzene, albeit barely noticeable.
But here's the kicker and what is disappointing me the most:
During the shave I am getting some tickling and slight burning on my skin.
Reminds me of Krampert's Bay Rum, which I had to pif as it was unusable.
Since I don't have the original base of GTB to make a comparison, I am unsure whether or not
it is the base or the scent ingredients.
The aftershave also had a significant "burn", but that has since subsided.
I will say this. Mike's Barbershop, indeed everyone of the Mike's Natural line of soaps
NEVER, but never, burned my face.
So, the verdict is still out on this product, but there is absolutely no comparison to the
Midnight Stag. ZERO.

Day 4 with the OT. I decided to use up this old sample of Lavanille today. This is 'one of those' scents from B&M. Such varied opinions, but I like the scent of this one. Would I buy a full tub? I'd replenish Seville first. Took the soap to the bowl and took the time to get a pretty nice lather. I used to bowl lather exclusively, but over the last 3 years or so have transitioned to mainly face lathering. I did enjoy it this morning, and it had the added bonus of breaking in this boar a bit more.
3 passes later and I'm not as smooth as yesterday thanks to a little sandpaper on my lower right neck, but still a nice result. Finishing off with the excellent CL splash is always a good idea.
This month, I focussed on my Gillette NEWs and my Old Type. Call it a vintage Gillette OC focus, I guess. I really enjoyed every one of these razors. They are all slightly different, but I love 'em all. I also got to show off the skill of @MrEE , as the LC, Bostonian and OT are recently back from his plastic surgery studio. Good morning

Excellent first shave with the Gamechanger! Three passes for near BBS. Just the lightest tickle from the alum.

I found the razor to be intuitive. No trouble finding and maintaining the angle.

Another month of shaves in the books. I started the month getting the Dart dialed back in and focusing on my Barrister and Mann soaps and aftershaves. Most of the rest of the month was spent playing with new razors with a few because it has a blade in it shaves.

April? Hmm...
All I can say for sure is that I'll shave.

A couple new acquisitions put to use today....L'Occitane shaving cream-Cade...is a subtle lightly woody perfumy 'soapy' aroma. A purchase in January, along with L'Occitane's EdT. Yesterday I also received a delivery from West Coast Shaving....probably one of the fastest deliveries EVER (other than Amazon). Finally broke down on the Omega EVO purchase, got a deal along with free shipping. Ordered Saturday, delivered Monday, wow. The EVO....a great synthetic brush. Like the 30DC'rs that enabled me on this one...the handle is 'meh' not bad, but the knot is awesome. Might use it for awhile as it is, then transplant it.

The EVO and Cade SC worked a wonderful bowl lather of slick, cushiony, voluminous goodness. 2 passes with the Henkels most everywhere (WTG/XTG), and some follow up buffing of the right jawline/neck. DFS+ results with no crimson or irritation. This razor is always a smooth shaver. Quick light application of PAA's Star Jelly, and a couple of spritz's of EAV DES BAVX....off to a great smelling Tuesday. This fragrance is a very nice, long lasting, wifey approved, vanilla with tobacco blend.

Today, I decided to end this month on a high note and do an above the shoulder shave. I will be using the Parker SRB for the Face and the Jones Shake Sharp for the dome.

Being cooped up indoors is difficult so I decided to use Stirling Christmas Eve SS to make me smile. I know that it is against convention to use it other than the winter months, but I like this scent so much that I will use it anytime during the year. Anyway, I facelathered this awesome smelling soap to a nuce wet lather. On a 40 hr stubble, the Parker SRB gave me an IBSS+ with 2 passes. I didn't bother with touchups because I was fine with the results. I didn't have any cuts or irritation so this was a real close, comfortable shave. Ended the shave in my usual way.

Headshave: The gear was the same except that I used the Shake Sharp Razor (not pictured). This is my #1 for headshaves. Did 3 passes and some touchups that produced a cueball smooth shave. First blade up was the Rapira Platinum Lux. I went for a new approach today (and I won't be using it again) - WTG and XTG both ways. This left me needing more than a little cleanup and basically a 4th pass. This resulted in more irritation than usual and dozens of tiny weepers on my neck and jawline. These weepers were history after a shower and the balm. I didn't feel any problems with the blade during the shave - it was sharp and smooth. The post shave feel is also fantastic!

I'll give this blade a 7.5/10 for sharpness and comfort.

I will revisit blades that score more than 6/10 in my tests. Next blade up is the Gillette 7 o'clock Super Platinum (Blacks).

Getting a break here long enough for a report.
Got out my B-G , double edge, open comb, folding thumb-finger grip, razor.
Loaded a new Feather Blade and went to work.

I have to go a little slower with this razor, but I can get a good shave otherwise.
Holding the cap at the right angle and keeping it there is the skill set needed to run this tool.
Not being a brush hog, I still got a respectable shave non the less.
Got out my assortment of Stirling Spice, soap, AS, and ASB.
Got some great lather and blew up the house with the scent.
Both Head and Face got 2 passes and I'm clean and smooth ready to go.
No issues!

Blade: Gillette Nacet
Brush: PAA Starcraft
Lather: Tabac
Aftershave: Tabac

One final shave in March, and I did use some Tabac. Two passes, and I have a nice DFS. It feels good to have a smooth face again. I'll try to be better in April, but I already know I a home for the whole month. I hope everyone has been doing well.

Well, believe it or not, the end of March has arrived. What a month. Great month on here and I want to thank everyone again for your constant support and participation in spite of a really unique and unprecedented month in the real world. Looks like April is going to continue in that vein, so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone around again to maintain some normalcy in the world. Well, normal for us anyway. I know for most other people we aren't exactly the model of "normal". But that's ok. We don't want to be.

Final day of the month I just kept the Fatboy and Sharpstar out as it's a nice lead in to April anyway. El Caballero with the JR46 for great lather and three passes for the baby to show up. Fine, fine shave and a great way to end the month. See you all in April!!

Things are really moving now . Nice close drama free face shave and since I was in the area kept on going for the head . Got a boot brush style on top so its not a full head shave . See you all in April !
