Great report, Paul! I struggle with the corners of my mouth as well--my beard grows in all the directions of the compass in that very concentrated area, so I have to find the direction that is least ATG on the 1st and 2nd passes (seems to be inside to out, and down). Huge hassle.
Hey, us bloomers could be wasting pennies on every shave. Worse yet, reduced soap life could mean we buy more soap, supporting more artisan soap makers adding more variety and availability. We deserve harassment. We are not part of the problem. We ARE the problem.
See, what I do for the mustache area is south-to-north on each side(near where the weeper happens)and north-to-south down the middle. Going a little easier on the sides(S-N)is the first task of solving this.

there are a couple of small spots like that i have to use a small trimmer with,just not worth the complications if oops happened..right in the corners of mouth and rhght under the nose.
