The Shave
Okay, I need to come clean. Three weeks into the lockdown, in a moment of weakness, I bought a shavette from China. Just two months prior I got rid of all my GEM razors because I wanted to simplify my life, and I didn’t want multiple blade platforms. Since I couldn’t find a single GEM style shavette that meant my 1912 and MMOC got shipped off to a new home.

And then I saw the Strong Leopard 77-A--a nearly straight-sized shavette--and I made the 12 dollar purchase without even thinking. Then settled down for the month-long wait. 2 months later it hadn’t showed up, tracking showed it sitting in a sorting center for at least a month, and probably would continue to until the end of days. And I was kind of glad; those 77-a style blades were going to be a hassle to keep re-ordering. This was fate’s way of saying, “Stick to your guns, stupid!”

Then this showed up in my mailbox yesterday…

As you can see, the 77-a blades are considerably longer than your standard DE blade...

But how does it shave? After pass #1 (WTG), I rinsed and did a quick assessment; for the most part it was decent, but I was not impressed with how much stubble remained on the chin.

Pass #2 (XTG) was a bit better, but still a bit stubble-ier than I like to see after 2 passes.

Pass #3 (ATG) went a lot better, but my chin was still giving me fits--touch-ups required. Now, after touching up, I’m pleased with the shave. Solidly between BBS and DFS, and no noticeable irritation. Nice, but hard-won, results. Too soon to put the verdict out on this shavette, but already I have identified some pros and cons…

Pros

The blade size. I. Love. It. The 77-a style blade covers a lot of real estate and it’s easier to keep things flat and avoid catching a corner.

Weight. It’s nice and heavy. The description says it’s stainless steel (looks almost like galvanized pipe), and even though the cheap, CHEAP plastic scales are crazy light, the Strong Leopard has a nice heft to it. I like it a lot

Design. I really like the hinge design. Easy to load, and it allows the razor to take on the profile of an actual straight razor (half-hollow, perhaps). This looks and feels more like a straight razor than any other shavette I’ve used.

Cons

Design. The swinging door that I like so much is held in place by a sliding hinge. Mine seemed very loose during the shave. In fact a few times during the shave, the clip came close to sliding off. The clip can easily be bent to make it tighter though.

The clip can be easily bent. This probably means it can be unbent pretty easily and will require rebending over and over again. I can’t imagine you can do this forever--eventually it will break.

QC. Quality control is not fantastic. The rivet holding the locking mechanism is very loose. This allows the slightest bit of play in the hinge, which allows for a bit of blade chatter. Because of this, I can’t tell if the blade just isn’t that sharp, or if too much play is keeping the blade from doing its thing. I’m going to have to take a hammer to the pin and see if I can tighten things up a bit. If I screw that up and break the rather cheap rivet, the whole thing becomes useless unless I can jury rig my own clipping mechanism--scary prospect.

All foibles aside, though, I really enjoyed shaving with the Strong Leopard, and I hope the poor cutting is resolved by tightening things up rather than being a characteristic of these particular Cloud 77-a blades. Now, off to the garage!

Very nice shave Tim! My Dovo Shavette can take a Personna Headshave blade which is just as large as a straight so I understand your being comfortable with a long blade. When I first started with shavette shaving, I only used a regular DE blade. However, when I did get the Dovo and Personna long blades, the shaves were quite different and more efficient.

You could look at the Artist Club format.

Clones are inexpensive. Blades are more so than 1/2 DE.

I don't believe that I have ever shaved with anything that has the cutting ability to beat a Feather Professional Super.

Today's lather did not disappoint.
The boar bristles busily worked Manuel's product into this lather-frenzy.
Feast your eyes on this:

That's right, lather-iscious.
The razor, once again, was the .84 OC Game Changer, today loaded with a fresh Voskhod blade.

I have to say, I have had smoother shaves with Voskhods.
This shave was not up to par. Not rough, but lacking smoothness.
User error...
Don't think so, but anything's possible.
This blade's getting binned.
Completed the shave with one of my favorite of the Old Spice family of aftershaves.

The shave this morning was as good as always, so not much to report. The best part was that again, I got the coveted SWMBOSOA (©️ @Primotenore ). Two days in a row, which may be a record. This really is a terrific scent, though, one of my personal favorites. I hope everyone has a great Friday!

Fat Friday is here again and it was another enjoyable shave. The lather did the disappearing act on the second pass for some reason, but the soap is so slick it didn't affect the shave. Aqua Velva Musk finished it all off. Two passes for a DFS without irritation.

Day two with the Cooper Monobilt! The shave yesterday was spectacular, and today’s was just more of the same! Really not much to report other than my continuing focus on this incredible shaving cream, Nancy Boy Signature. @b1hart has jumped on the bandwagon, and reported a great shave with it, and added to its luster by sharing his educated olfactory appreciation of the various scent components that this bumbling nasal barbarian could never hope to do. I suspect that @jluc may be joining us shortly as well, giving his vast, modern artisan, razor armamentarium the opportunity to sport in it. The shave was the same one and 1/2 pass (WTG, ATG) masterpiece as yesterday’s shave. Mr. Cooper delivered the expected VBBS leaving your happy narrator feeling clean, velveteen smooth, cool and refreshed.

RAZOR: Cooper Monobilt
BLADE: Sharp Star (2)
PREP: Cold water rinse
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 Tribute w/ 26mm Boar Ferrule
CREAM: Nancy Boy Signature enhanced with 6 Drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with Glyce Glycerin soap followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Nancy Boy Signature Scent Cooling After-Shave Gel.

TGIF. Back to the NEW this morning. Expertly replated by @MrEE , it matches well with Evan's turned handle as well. Whipped up the usual excellent Jeeves lather with this quality synth knot and had 3 easy passes. Not perfect results, but not very far from it. Didn't really chase it either, though. Finishing with a CL splash always ends up being a good idea.

Under the cloak of darkness, I placed an order last night for 1000 Voskies. I threw caution to the wind and ordered a Tabac puck in the milk glass bowl as well. A feller might as well live large.

Everyone likes Tabac, right? Some are even manly enough to admit it.

Shaves with my Slim, 30DC LE Brush, and Tabac have generally been great. Had my first tiny cut on my nostril this morning, but nothing major. Not a single granule has appeared in the lather.

My Bride is doing well (super proud of her), and we're taking it a day at a time in the great state of Minnesota.

A rare no shave day for me. Asha and I left before 5am for Tampa, FL to search for her a place to live when she starts the PhD program in August. Success, i think we found a place.

Now off to the beach.

A rare no shave day for me. Asha and I left before 5am for Tampa, FL to search for her a place to live when she starts the PhD program in August. Success, i think we found a place.

Now off to the beach.

Thank you Joe. We still have to do the paperwork but at least we’ve decided on the location.

Thank you Charlie. It will be so nice to have her in the same time zone. We’re going to Ybor City to have Cuban food for lunch tomorrow.

Very nice shave Tim! My Dovo Shavette can take a Personna Headshave blade which is just as large as a straight so I understand your being comfortable with a long blade. When I first started with shavette shaving, I only used a regular DE blade. However, when I did get the Dovo and Personna long blades, the shaves were quite different and more efficient.

Thank you, Joe--I can see the appeal of those Personna Hairshaper blades. The longer blades are just so nice!
