1. Part of that is to account for spring back, or how much the razor goes back to it's original form. It's one of the things Tom will be checking tonight.

  2. That's fantastic news, Tom! How does the twist compare to the Valencia? From the shave report, it sounds as though they shave pretty much the same.

  3. I figured I might get maybe 1/16” but it is closer to 1/8”. I will redesign the twist and recut the existing jig. That will get me to where the Valencia is at.

  4. Valencia on left Gillette on right.
My twist is opposite. Chalk that up to being a left handed dyslexic.

  5. Annealing it beforehand might have gotten it there.

...but if we can get it there without annealing, that would be the better way to go.

Awww! It's so cute!!! Tom made a slant for left handed shavers! (FYI, slants shave exactly the same regardless of twist direction, but some lefties just like to bellyache).

Tom, I know it was an "Oops," but this is a good thing. It will differentiate remanufactured slants from vintage slants.

  7. It looked RIGHT in my minds eye. I have to stop working in The House of Mirrors.

  8. Sometimes you've just got to stop looking at stuff from a slanted perspective. :p

  9. Changed the title from "Is 2020 the year of the Gillette Slant?" to "2020 is definitely the year of the Gillette Slant."

  10. Ingenious. How wide (form teeth to teeth) is the jig?

  12. It's the width of a Gillette Old Type baseplate, made from a mirror image of a Valencia slant baseplate, which in turn was made from a French Leresche baseplate, which is a copy of the Gillette single ring's baseplate. If you want the answer in millimeters, you'll need to ask Tom @twhite.

  13. Ever been any such thing as a TTO slant? Would expect it'd be terribly complicated to engineer and manufacture (and impossible to retrofit) but could one be designed that works?

  16. Ingenious and so very cool!

But what is the advantage of a slant?

  17. It really comes down to opinion.

A few (like me) don't buy the explanations of how a slant head makes the blade "slice" through whiskers vs a regular DE "chopping" through, and can tell no difference in comfort or shave quality when using a slant.

Others believe it is a superior shaving geometry and/or just love using slants; to them I say, "Enjoy your shave!"

Either way, it'll be fine. None of us is getting out of here alive and we sure ain't taking favorite razors with us. I do think they're neat to look at.

  18. Cutting angle plus additional rigidity. The latter especially can make a huge difference.

  19. I think it is the rigidity also.

  20. I think it could be done. It would be expensive, and probably have to be largely 3D printed, but it could be done. This all assumes you are talking about a Gillette style TTO.

Retrofitting a TTO would probably be easier. Too bad Cooper Monobilts are not exactly common. I suspect that they would be ideal candidates.
