TSD Update


I haven't shaved since the tenth. Mandatory mask order. More comfortable with a beard. Will resume edge grooming with a shavette tomorrow.

The last time I grew a beard....


I was skiing high altitudes in Colorado. A beard makes the face shield much warmer. At the top of Copper, Loveland and Arapahoe Basin, I regularly encountered temps of -13f (-25 Canadian) with winds to boot. Except, back then, I saw the point in covering my face... Not so much these days.

When will the world be sane again?

Sunday shave: For those who think that straights can not be as sharp as Feather DE or Pro (SE blade) I wish you try this straight. Sharp is sharp and this smiling Ali's Blade is sharp. The Shavemac made good work of the CK-6 formula and every element of the shave was fantastic. The only down side to this sharp is if it is sticking above this skin it will be removed. I had two pimples and they were just sliced off and bleed. If it were not the pimple this would have been epic.

Awesome shave and my pinky can attest to straights being sharp.

 

Today's shave may be the antithesis of the theme for the month. It is very basic in nature and in tribute to our very own Mr. Gillette. Gary @brit possesses the finest collection of pristine vintage Gillette razors that I know of. His focus and dedication to the traditional double edge shave is unwavering and will always have my admiration.

Therefore the Gillette New SC, Derby shave stick, a 1/2¢ one and done blade, Omega boar brush, and Aqua Velva, get the call... all proven economical workhorses. Take that.... You $5 shave cartridge!

I consider myself a libertarian on the style of facial hair removal one chooses to use, I pretty much like them all.

It is my guess though that most came to the 30 Day Crew through the conduit of the traditional double edge safety razor after having fled issues with cartridges. The foundational 30DC principle being, excessive gear changeups are counter productive to the development of good shaving skills.

It has become my opinion that shavers who regularly deliver very close and comfortable shaves with a variety of DE razors have hit some very high peaks. Today's shave confirms that in my case. Even though I used low angles, low pressure, and good skin stretching, I chose to end up satisfied with an irritation free DFS rather than push into 'irritation nation' territory.

i came to the 30dc to learn to shave.after 35+ years of not so great cart shaves.i tried what generations of folks including my grandad used.a gillette safety razor.it worked.it took time and effort to learn this skill properly.after muddling with gillettes for a year or so i came to the 30 DC thread to learn a proper way.something i should have learned as a teenager but was robbed of the experience.in the western hemisphere gillette and others were pushing plastic disposables and electrics.we were duped imho..
blade technology is better in a lot of ways but still lacks longevity,but that's the blade business.those of you that use personna 74s and gillette spoilers know this.blades that last forever will not let a company profit..
my point...i achieved my goal.i went from crap shaves twice a week with ingrown hair issues to daily near bbs/bbs shaves using 100 year old technology.preaching to the choir i am sure..
i will always be thankful for being accepted here and helped.the 30DC fundamentals work..the only limitations are your own,be it safety razors,straights or shavettes.if one honestly follows the rule and/or focus for just a month and still doesn't like it here,their shaves should have improved..again i am rambling on,thank you all gents for your dedications to the vintage gillette de shave..

 

my pragmatic reasons for staying with de over single edge..a controversial subjective issue but this is just a opinion..i love the look and shave of single edge razors but all have their pros and cons.
1- gem.pal,eveready,valet-awesome shave.but look how much metal is thrown away when the edge is dull.lack of blade choices,today only of course,lots around when these were in production.
2-schick injector- awesome shaves but,hard to clean,blades not removable on most models unless it's being replaced.requires a blade load type mechanism that got tossed out when empty,more waste.lack of blade choices again.
3-de-gillette, merkur,dozens of others.awesome shave.a de is an se,just with 2 sides..many guys get twisted with this one,ask Fuzzy...constant blade tech upgrades over the years,little waste-at least now.when they had blade dispensers from the 50s to the 80s this wasn't the case.many blade choices,most if not all de razors are variations of the gillette double ring.lots of gadgetry over the simple 3 piece models,some poor blade clamping designs..
these are just thoughts and not rules set in stone.i am sure there are modern razors that produce a shave far superior to the old gillettes..but i love em..

Great shave, PierPaolo! Certain right wing factions of the Catholic Church condemned this Stones song as satanic when it first came out! Really helped sell the album!

 

With respect to single edge blades there are more choices than you might think. There are still several Gem blade makers out there, the Feather FHS, FAS series, and let’s not forget AC blades. Feather has the Pro, Proguard, Super, Softguard, Light, there’s the Schick Proline P-30, not to mention the Kai AC Captain, Mild etc. Schick injector Magazines, at least the metal ones are reloadable, and are never tossed by me. I routinely reload them with Schick B-20 Prolines.

I also love DEs, and have shaved with a fair number of modern artisan Safety razors, and can say that some are great and others not so much! The Gillette Standard, Deluxe and LC easily hold their own against the best of the modern razors. Or else why would I be buying and why would Fine Accoutrements be selling a new SS razor that essentially mimics the head geometry of the Gillette New LC?

 

Being the biggest club on hearth, the Church should study better who to use marketing.
