  6. I have no idea, my only guess is that when a barber uses two hands to control the blade???

I think there is a difference in the feeling of sharp and real sharpness. Feather Pro and DE blades in some razors felt sharper to me than straight razors. Also it seemed like full hollow straights were sharper than my 3/4 hollow razors so I decided to an unscientific test. My toughest stubble is on my final pass ATG on my chin and upper lip. I compared the feeling of sharpness during the shave versus how easily it passed through the stubble on my upper lip ATG. Ultimately there was a difference between perceived sharpness and actual sharpness in my nonscientific test.

I read a study some years ago where they did test the sharpness of various blades and straights. As expected Feather DE blades (the did not test the Feather Pro style blades) was the sharpest among DE blades and the straights were the same sharpness as the Feather DE. This surprised me. The popular perception is that a machine can out hone a human but on the other hand I do not think that DE blades are honed with a grit as high as straights. I finish on a 16k or 20k grit stone and the use pasted strops that go up to at least 100k grit.

So my theory is that thinner a blade is the sharper it feels. This was apparent to me when comparing straights of different levels of hollow grinding. Also DE blades felt sharper in some razors compared to others, I think this was due to how tightly the blade was clamped and how much flex there was in the blade during shaving.

Other possible reason is that the edge of a straight can be customized, and most of the times they razors are honed to sharp and smooth. If a blade is smooth it does not feel as sharp even though it is. I recently used a freshly honed near wedge Japanese razor, you could not feel it cutting and the edge just felt like velvet on the skin but based on the results it was very sharp and cut through even the toughest stubble without hesitation.

I guess we need some with OCD to do a real test.
  7. Thanks Joe! I always liked Cryogen. It is slick and it is very cold. I am glad that I am giving this new puck the opportunity to redeem the disastrous first puck.
  8. After yesterday's less than stellar but useable edge I wanted redemption so I went with my Dovo Master's which has a fantastic edge, smooth and sharp. I am so confident with this razor I went with a chilly soap, Lemon Chill. The results today, excellent.

  9. May I suggest a short burst of Mendelssohn's Hallelujah chorus first and then as you start to leave the grounds play Ray Charles' Hit the Road Jack! In any event, I will be singing Praise God repeatedly to the melodic tune of Amazing Grace!

  10. Terrific shave, Keith! For some reason, the razor has an intergalactic vibe to it. :D

  11. I should add the difference in sharpness between the blades was small with the exception of few DE blades but I do not recall the names.

  14. other than the obvious difference in packaging to the derby premium.they both measure out at .09 mm.the usta blades have a shinier ground area at the cutting edges compared to the premium, possibly indicating a finer grind..i checked this on random examples throughout the tucks.we will see..
