Spent at least an hour last night drooling through the spectacular Koraat parade on their website. I must have seen fully a fifth of the hundreds of photos. There goes my next week of SR voyeurism.

So why not post today's vintage fail? My Torrey is at least attractive, even if I haven't yet gotten it to hold an edge. When my summer of chaos ends, it is first in the honing queue.

Absent a real honing station until I finish some plumbing, I gave my recently acquired, half revived H.G.H Co. Premier Razor Hone a shot at the Torrey. I gave the Torrey a shot at three passes. Then the Le Grelot 52 P.Hospital did the real shaving.

I could say that freshening an edge with a few strokes on a barber hone using a little lather is an urban legend. Or I could admit that all I did to 'restore' this hone was wash off most of the greasy oil residue and swarf. It needs a lot more work. The oily instruction sheet recommends medium fine emery paper.

Thank you Gary. I really like the looks of this shoulderless beauty. Cool when the shave matches the look.

Am I seeing things??? I thought Keith swore off old Sheffields because they can’t take that laser sharp edge.

Just messing with you... great blade.

I was just giving it another try. I am going to sell my Sheffields as despite my efforts my try is still a tad below where I want the edges.

It is a shame as they are some cooling looking razors.

My one and only Japanese razor got the call to take on some heavier stubble. No one pass was remarkable but the result was smooth and close :happy036:

All I have on this one is “Paris.”
So, I’m going out on a limb and guessing an old French razor. :)

I got this one in April of 2018, and every time I would think today is the day to restore, I would just skip it. I mean, I really think this one is neat, but I couldn’t figure out what to do with the rust because it has such a beautiful mirror finish.

Finally I settled on single edge scraper blade to remove the rust, keep the devil’s spit, and just go Flitz (no steel wool). I am completely happy with the result, as I can just call the result “character.”

It is what I would call an experience razor, as it has built in challenges...

The tang is thin and tapers sharply, which makes it prone to over rotating when going around things like a chin or shifting as you shave under your nose. :duel:

The tail resembles a stub tail, so one more thing to minimize stability. And finally the grind does have a hollow... sort of. :)

But the spine seemed a little thin for the blades width, so just popped 3 layers of tape on it to hone, and was pretty compliant in getting a shaving edge.

Needless to say, I had a low bar for the shave, but I was happily surprised. Yes it was an experience, but the result was darn good, and I had a blast getting there.
    Enjoy your shave,
    Tom

Probably mid 1800’s as the 7 star mark was granted in 1835.

This was a wreck... chipped point and the backside scale was broke in half. A little super glue and a quick nose job, and Mr. Johnson is back in action.

    Another silent whisker assassin. :)

This John & Wm Ragg has been waiting patiently for some time. For some reason the top of the tang reminds me of an alligator’s back. Fortunately the shave is nothing like that. Much like the Suzumasa, no pass was remarkable but the end result was unmistakenly close and smooth. :happy036:
