Thanks, Gary! You too! Today is my first full hone from bevel set to finish. Ben said a lot of guys would send these type of warped bladeS off to Glen Mercurio or Howard Schechter. Ben learned honing from Howard Schechter, a contemporary of Lynn Abrams. He taught me Howard’s blade finger placement technique for these kind of issues. So I guess I’ll either end up with a great razor, or a piece of junk that I’ll have to send out to a pro. We’ll see?
Excellent shave setup and beautiful photo, Jim! I just pif'd my tub of Pharaoh's Dreamsicle to a new wetshaver. I really enjoyed it, but didn't reach for it that often.
Fabulous shave, Andrew! A BBS is a BBS and one minor slip does not disqualify! You keep reminding me of my matching or similar razors. I need to take the Paul Revere L Type out for a spin! Enjoy your Saturday with those great kids! They grow up too dang fast, but at least there’s grandkids!
Thank you, Jeff! I've been pretty fortunate lately bypassing any nicks or cuts. It's bound to happen. My Schick shaves are almost on autopilot; great razors. The kids are really glad to have the first week of virtual school in the books (me too). And they are growing fast! My grocery bill will tell you that...
Thanks, Clint! But not by a long shot! Today’s project should be fun! If I get a decent edge out of the Puma I’ll shave with it tomorrow. This is only my fourth honing exercise, although the first two times didn’t deliver any kind of shaveable edge. If it works, then I’ll feel that I have an approach that I can continue with. I like that I only have two stones unlike my son, who’s invested a ridiculous amount into honing. But he is an amateur blade smith. He just built his first forge. He’s quite serious about pursuing bladesmithing as a second career when he retires. He’s got more than a decade to develop his skills. I just hope I’m alive to see him do it!
Joe, I’m not doing so well. My first two honing tries were unmitigated disasters. But you were spot on about straights! It’s much more fun if you shave with an edge you’ve created yourself. I’ve never gone from bevel set through finish yet, but today’s the day. I’m cheating a bit because Ben’s coming over with his daughter Sarah and her child Lily today. He’s agreed to watch and only step in if I’m really screwing the pooch. Have you ever honed a razor with a slightly warped blade?
Gary, the nice thing about Colonial Razor is that handles and heads are interchangeable and can be purchased separately. I just mounted the General handle to the Silversmith head. Here are some pics if you are interested in how it would look.
I have all the C model Valets but the VB1. It’s identical to the VC1, except for the plating. I already own a VB2 presentation set, so never bothered.
