What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

One of mine has a bit of a smile and I've been curious about this ever since I got my own stones. Is it a matter of just, and forgive my phrasing here, moving the blade so that every bit of the edge gets it's fair share of the stone, as opposed to just keeping it flat like a non smiley razor? The "how" of that just occurred to me...off to YT!

 

Glenn @gssixgun has a good video and that is how I learned. I describe is a swooping x stroke allowing you get the entire and edge and follow the curve of the blade.

Thanks, Keith! The edge on this Tanifuji is amazingly smooth and sharp! If all Japanese razors shave like this one, I understand my son’s passion. I think I may pick up another one.

Instead of the Tanifuji, I used my CKBA Damascus with Koa wood scales which initially had a sharp edge, the builder was a knifemaker, and finished it on a Norton 8k. It was shaveable, but a bit rough. After several successively diluted slurries on my jasper stone and an hour and a half of burnishing on the jasper, the edge was mirror bright, and the shave a delight this morning!

Wow, does this live up to its name. I love the look of the 5&6/8 versions, but this 8/8 now has a special place in my heart.

6/8 Manaslu 500 Yasuki Steel, cream, balm, and EdT were Dior Eau Sauvage, Yesterday’s shave was just a redux of the Gold Monkey shave, testing a different slurry stone (tomo nagura).

 

Thanks Steve. Yeah, I have seen a few since I got this one, but definitely not one I see often. Got lucky with the purchase as there was no reference to size.

I appreciate just how much you can fit on the backside tang, explaining you are the sole manufacturer of the original and true pipe razor. Guess you had to fight back against those Wade & Butcher Pipe razors.

I do like the depth of this mark and how the blade gets slightly bigger at the point... cool profile.
