Thanks gentlemen. I knew my explanation would sound a bit strange. I will keep Stirling and Stephans on the list to possibly investigate. It may be awhile as I have quite a bit of CC to finish first.
As far as I know, I like clove so I don't think that's what I was picking up.
From Wikipedia:
Benzoin is a common ingredient in incense-making and perfumery because of its sweet vanilla-like aroma. Based on that scent description, I don't think I was put off by the Benzoin, either.
I don't think it was Bergamot as I enjoy orange/floral scents.
It could possibly be the black licorice which is characteristic of black strap rum:
Rich, creamy, molasses filled aroma exploding with maple syrup and black licorice with a sweet, full body and intense, slightly woody finish.
I suppose it could be the bay. I don't know that I've ever smelled West Indie bay by itself.
Again, B&M's expression of BR gets high marks by many, just not me. It's the only shaving product that I've disliked enough to pass it on based on scent alone, and that includes Arko and Clubman.

It was truly irritating to my nose.
