  3. Excellent shave Jeff. Your are becoming quite adept with the honing process.
  4. Be safe, Blair.

Since we go to Pensacola Beach frequently (love the area), we get all the local emergency alerts. There has been a steady stream of text messages and emails over the past week. My heart breaks for the people along the coast that have been impact by the recent storms. We have been evacuated overnight the last couple of Octobers we've been down there due to Hurricanes Nate and Michael. You almost have to sleep with one eye open during tropical storm season.

  7. Maybe, sorta! I'm trained as a scientist. Thomas Kuhn, a Princeton University Professor wrote a book, "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" (approx. 1969) in which he argued that science proceeds according to sets of rules called a paradigm until someone encounters a problem ("anomaly") which the old paradigm can't address. For example, prior to Einstein there was the Newtonian Paradigm where everything was thought to be based on the rules of Newtonian mechanics. Then along comes Einstein, who pointed out that the old paradigm couldn't account for the reship between space and time and a new paradigm based on an anomaly or problem in the old is born. I was using that as a reference to how I'd always thought the closest shave was just based on the best technique, which I still believe. I, however, was not a semi-competent straight shaver at that time. I realize now that there is much more freedom with respect to blade angle and approach than I thought previously. Thus my new shave paradigm.
  8. Re; Scope:
Interesting, I have a Jiusion. Looks the same. I can use it on my phone, but don't think I get your result.
I've thought about buying a scientific stereo microscope. No action though.
Managing with various hand held optics.
I've been relying on the thumbpad test and shave feel for feedback.

    Re; Paradigm shifting
Even though open edge shaving usually takes more skill development time most seem to hit a level where the focus is moved to 'Their Edge'. Some plateau at a level that pleases them, some amass nice quarry collections. I just don't experience or see others declaring a new hardware dependant learning curve, open edge, like that of safety razors.

Once I knew everything, that was 'all' I 'ever' knew.

  9. Thanks Clint. Fewer choices keeps decision-making simple. I look in the mirror, and I see simple. I need simple. :)

  13. Just look atcha, Jeff! For someone who WAS NOT going to be a straight razor shaver, you've done a complete 180. Now you're even honing successfully, and even speaking the lingo. You're making us all proud.

  16. I wore it for probably thirty years when I was working right up to the death of my first wife. It's a pretty low key scent, and would probably be thought old fashioned these days.
