Razor - Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements - Double Open Comb Ascension (316L Stainless Steel Adjustable)
    Blade - [IMG] *6th Shave
Brush - Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements "The Green Ray" *Faux Horse Hair
Preshave Soap - PAA Cube with Dock
Shaving Soap - Razor Emporium "Citrus"
Aftershave - Thayers Witch Hazel *Mentholated
Post-Shave Balm - Advanced Clinicals Anti-aging Hyaluronic Acid Cream
Fragrance - Issey Miyake "L'eau d'Issey Eau Eté Summer 2009"

I wasn't going to do a shave today. Was vegging out and didn't bathe in the morning. Now it's 1pm afternoon and I want a shower and shave on a lazy day. I will add a twist of PAA menthol crystals and lather this in a bowl and use the preshave soap as well.

***EDIT - Ahh. Refreshing shave while the Vegas heat is still 'there' but starting to transition to Fall. I got a fine shave overall. The 6th shave on the blade 'barely' got it done. At the end of the shave I felt some very minor irritation underneath the skin a bit. So, better safe than sorry I went to the PAA Alum block and found a few patches of sting. That seemed to remedy the minor itchy type irritation. I had to decide whether more irritation would rear its head and whether to go to the dry powder to stop redness (but will delay the skin healing some).....or go to the balm which won't stop any residual irritation, but will engage recovery quicker. I opted for the balm after thinking it over and feeling around and making my best guess.

Post-shave treatment can be tricky depending on the outcome of the shave. It takes trial and error and experience. If in doubt, and if I have somewhere to go where ensuring the redness is stopped, then talc or dry powder of some kind is the best route. If you have nothing important going on, then balm is better for speed of healing. Something about the dry powder method seems to keep oils off the skin and blood seems to be less able to reach the top layers to restore and heal. I've found that once I do a face wash and clean off the drying powder, the skin seems to still need it's normal healing course to begin. I've only 'stalled' the natural healing process that skin oils and blood flow are a part of. So, using the proper product for recovery or minimizing redness should be made based on circumstance. If irritation is very bad, then powder should be used even if it delays the healing because I don't want to go hours feeling burn and itch. Drying powder helps minimize the discomfort. I've found balm doesn't stop irritation and can even exacerbate it. Another option is to just go with a splash of mentholated witch-hazel and just have dry skin that slowly restores natural oils over a course of hours as a third recovery option.

After having finished writing this, I believe I made the right choice with the Alum, rinse, Witch-hazel and balm. My skin has no significant irritation or itch and will recover fine. Pretty much got BBS out of this. I have to not get lazy next time and change that blade after 5 shaves. No 6th shave on this blade/razor combo from now on.
  14. Great shot and write up Matt. Very sleek and classic looking.
