These are two German brushes that @Douglas Carey has that originally belonged to his Grandfather. He sent them to me along with two new knots. It can be hard to duplicate colors just by looking at the pics, especially since he already stripped the paint off. Also the original varnish most likely yellowed with age. So this is what I came up with.....................
I'm sure you're BOTH proud of how those brushes came out! Happy to see a great job done on such important pieces!
Brushes arrived yesterday. They look even better than in the pictures. I'm trying to find these German made brushes, however, I can't seem to locate the originals. They must be before the II World War as I can't see my grandfather buying anything from Germany after the war. I wasn't allowed to play with a German neighbors son when I was 7 in Waterbury Connecticut. Anyone have any ideas?
I have a similar one, but an octagon shaped bottom. Four flat sides, four curved. I think Doug's were the same. Yours shows a more four sided brush. But I have seen the same type of paint job, swirl patterns, as yours is on top on German and Chinese brushes.
Before being restored it said made in Germany. On the bottom of both handles. Thanks for the info though.
I have a similar acrylic octagon handled one that i purchased NOS. Made in the 50's. I cannot remember the manufacturer, and the brush is in storage at the moment. Remind me of this thread in 6 months. Plisson also made similar brush handles, but not generally for boar or from wood.
