I would say that you would use the red cob to wipe and the white cob to see if you are clean. If not, repeat the process. I googled and checked. It was the custom of early American rural citizens.

It seems to me that you have an opportunity for an aha moment by doing some leisure reading and applying what the manual says. You could even title the episode, Paul's Exploration and Discovery into the Unknown.
