  1. 020-12-22, Tuesday

We're down to the wire: this misty Tuesday is just three days away from Christmas!

Have you already chosen what surprise your wife/girlfriend/son will put under the tree?
I would have liked to have crocheted car seat covers, but I don't know whom to ask for....

As a child we used to celebrate on the 24th night.
How beautiful the tree all lit up with candles: the smell of wax, fir tree, oranges and tangerines that my parents arranged in the room....

Then I grew up and, like more or less everyone else, around the age of forty I discovered that Baby Jesus didn't exist and that my parents were the ones providing.

I admit that there was a certain perplexity in thinking that, although he was the son of God, he could deliver everything at the same time, but, not having contracted out the distribution to the Italian Post Service, it might have been possible and my mother, whom I asked for clarification, didn't have an acceptable answer and shrewdly got over it.

But, more than anything else, I was perplexed that the Baby Jesus (generally identified by a flickering star) came directly to my house: what about all the other children in the area? He always came straight to me! Never to a neighbor first!
Maybe I was the Chosen One! Even if, objectively, there weren't many reasons to choose me...

I never knew what Baby Jesus was doing after the delivery because I was too anxious to run to the dining room where one of the parents had finished arranging the presents.
And why were the noises coming from there while the little star was still twinkling in the sky?
But who cared? Greed was obnubilating my thought processes!

I won't be getting any presents on the 24th, and to make up for it, I treated myself to a comme il faut shave with the fattest soap.
    Like me.

However, today, after leaving it unused for a week, opening the bowl, I felt, overpowering, the smell of anise.
Fortunately, it soon vanished. Could it be that aniseed oil is more volatile than others?
I don't see any other reason, so in the end I didn't close the bowl, but left a crack, hoping that the anise will dissipate and the orange tones will remain.

Two passes and touch-ups and here's to the most handsome man in Southern Europe being the smoothest too!
